5 John Rawls Harvard Philosopher Two Rules:  Each person is to have an equal right to the most extensive basic liberty compatible with similar liberty for others.  Social and Economic inequalities are to be arranged so that they are both: a) reasonably expected to be to everyone’s advantage and b) attached to positions and offices open to all.

6 Difference between Aristotle & Rawls  Aristotle :Equality amongst each other  Rawls: Social balance

7 Problem (s) with Justice Approach  We may not always agree on who is equal  Who gets to decide who is equal  Who constitutes fairness

8 Questions to think about:  Would you consider an 18 year old an equal adult?  Do you consider an immigrant equal compared to a natural born citizen?
