1 In Pursuit of Happiness English 2P: Unit 3 ERWC Module

2 Unit Goal: After reading and discussing articles, research results, and comic strips about “happiness” students will be able to write an essay which describes views of happiness and states a position on the importance of pursuing happiness. Position will be supported through the use of ethos, pathos, and logos. Counterarguments will be integrated and addressed. Academic tone will be developed through the integration of readings and experiences in the writing.

3 Today’s Objective After participating in Give One Get One Exercise and analyzing research results on youth and happiness, students will be able to write a paragraph that identifies background knowledge and opinion on unit theme and topic.

4 AGENDA: First, we will reflect on our definitions of happiness through Give ONE GET ONE. Then, we will survey the class on what makes them happy and compare class results to research data. Finally, you will write a paragraph that describes your definition and opinion of happiness.

6 HAPPINESS What are three ways that people can achieve true happiness? Part 1 : Write out your ideas on how to achieve true happiness. (2 minutes) Part 2 : Talk to your classmates about their ideas on how to achieve happiness. It may not be anyone from your pod. (5 minutes) Part 3 : Reflect on your conversations and comment on one idea that you thought was MOST insightful. (5 minutes)

9 Analyze Happiness Survey Results Happiness Survey Results: 66 youth (35 Males and 31 Females), aged 11-19, were surveyed using questionnaires. Youth were asked to rate 16 items on a scale of 1 to 16, 1 being that which makes, or would make them most happy and 16 being that which makes them least happy. The following graph indicates the average results for each item: ANALYSIS TASK: CIRCLE: 3 categories that make youth LEAST happy. UNDERLINE: 3 categories that make youth MOST happy

EVIDENCE: What did the poll and the graph we analyzed reveal about what makes youth happy? ANALYSIS: How does your idea of happiness compare to those of your peers? How does your idea of happiness compare to those of the graph we analyzed? COMMENTARY: Can anyone ever achieve true happiness? Why or why not? Use examples from your observations and experience to support your commentary.
