The Skinny on Holiday Weight Gain According to a study done by the U.S. government, adults usually gain up to 2 pounds during the holidays—and they rarely lose it.

10 Survival Tips for the Holiday Season

1. Think Ahead Eat well throughout the day so you don’t overeat later—this might include a healthy snack right before you leave for a party.

2. Keep Your Freezer Stocked Prepare and freeze healthy meals ahead of time to have quick and healthy dinner options during the busy holiday season.

3. Indulge In What You Love Let yourself have one boozy treat or sweet, but then switch to lighter drinks and healthier food.

4. Avoid Grazing It’s tempting to nibble on dough while you bake up a batch of Christmas cookies, but this could lead to unnecessary extra calories. Sit down and savor the finished product instead.

5. BYO Dish Bring along a healthy dish or dessert to share. That way, you know you’ll have at least one healthy option.

6. Don’t Loiter at the Buffet If the food is close, you’re going to snack mindlessly. Grab a spot somewhere away from the cookies and candy.

7. Take a Smaller Plate This may sound simple, but it’s effective: less surface area = less food.

8. Don’t Overdo It on Sauces Spend your calories on food, not sugary cranberry sauce or fatty gravies. Take just enough to enjoy the flavor without going overboard.

9. Abandon an All-Or- Nothing Approach You don’t have to go crazy in order to enjoy the holidays. Really enjoy one treat—and don’t feel guilty about it.

10. Set a Goal to Maintain Weight It’s much more realistic to try to maintain your weight than to lose pounds. That can wait until after the holidays.

Keep MyPlate in Mind How should your holiday plate look
