THE SERMON FOLLOWING THE ONLY PERFECT EXAMPLE The Fourth in a series of FIVE Lenten sermons to help us discern God’s purposes for us Bayshore Gardens Community Church Dr. Daniel Herlein

THE FIRST of FIVE PURPOSES FOR US IN THIS LIFE IS TO BE LOVED BY GOD. That’s’s WHY God created us so He could love us! 1 John 4:10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that He FIRST LOVED US and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

THE SECOND of FIVE PURPOSES FOR US IN THIS LIFE IS TO LOVE GOD BACK. This what we call WORSHIP Romans 12:1 - Because of God’s great mercy to us, offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to His service and pleasing to Him. This is the true worship that you should offer.

THE THIRD of FIVE PURPOSES FOR US IN THIS LIFE IS TO REALLY CARE ABOUT EACH OTHER This what we call FELLOWSHIP John 13:34-35 (NIV) – “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (The words of Jesus)

THE FOURTH of FIVE PURPOSES FOR US IN THIS LIFE IS THAT WE SHOULD FOLLOW THE PERFECT EXAMPLE SET BY JESUS CHRIST Ephesians 4:15 (LGT) Begin the process of growing up to live more like Christ did in everything we do, say and think. Hebrews 12:2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.

Growing up in our faith is a PROCESS (Ephesians 4:15) God wants us to MATURE spiritually which is a life-long process (Hebrews 12:2) This process is called DISCIPLESHIP.

HOW DOES GOD HELP US TO GROW SPIRITUALLY? 1-GOD USES THE BIBLE AND ITS TRUTHS (Read, Study, Memorize, Meditate, Apply it) 2-GOD USES OTHER CHRISTIANS (Fellowship) 3-GOD USES ALL THINGS (Romans 8:28)

HOW JESUS, OUR EXAMPLE, HANDLED THREE VERY TOUGH SITUATIONS. EXAMPLE #1 Jesus faced TROUBLE in the garden of Gethsemane. God allows TROUBLE to teach us to TRUST Him. Every PROBLEM has a PURPOSE.

EXAMPLE #2 Jesus experienced TEMPTATION in the desert. GOD ALLOWS TEMPTATION TO TEACH US TO OBEY HIM

THREE FACTS TO REMEMBER (1)It is NOT a sin to be tempted. (2)Every one of us will be tempted in some way every day. (3)Every temptation is an opportunity to do good Jesus teaches us that every temptation is an opportunity to make a God-honoring choice; Every temptation is a stepping stone to become more like Jesus Christ.

EXAMPLE #3 Jesus, in His humanness, must surely have been tempted to RETALIATE against those crucifying Him. But here is Jesus’ response: FORGIVE them (Luke 23:34; 1 Peter 2:23; Romans 12:19ff)

GROWING UP and MATURING spiritually is a life-long process, This process is God’s FOURTH PURPOSE for us on this earth and it’s called DISCIPLESHIP! May God bless us as we seek to become more and more like Jesus Christ, following the example He set for us.

The Pastoral Prayer and The Lord’s Prayer OUR FATHER, WHO ART IN HEAVEN, HALLOWED BE THY NAME. THY KINGDOM COME, THY WILL BE DONE, ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN. GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD, AND FORGIVE US OUR DEBTS AS WE FORGIVE OUR DEBTORS; AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL. FOR THINE IS THE KINGDOM, AND THE POWER, AND THE GLORY FOREVER AMEN.
