3 Course Description In this course, emphasis is placed on grammar and mechanics, research, vocabulary, writing skills, and literature. Writing activities give students practice in organizing and developing formal communications, narrative, cause and effect, compare and contrast, and research compositions. Mastery of the writing process is expected. In addition, students study short stories, novels, poetry and a Shakespearean play. CUSD Course Catalog

4 Required Materials Pens (blue or black) Loose leaf paper Fine point dry erase pen Interactive notebook to class daily An email address (these are free; have one by Friday) Chandler High planner provided by the school or other type of planner

5 Grade Breakdown 20 % Practice 30 % Formative 50 % Summative Semester 1 Quarter 1=40% Quarter 2=40% Exam = 20% Semester 2 Quarter 3=40% Quarter 4=40% Exam = 20%

While some students may not be MYP students, all students will benefit from the learning philosophy and unit plans.

8 Assessment Standards Essays will be assessed using the Common Core Rubrics for Persuasive, Argumentative, Narrative, Explanatory/Informational Major projects will be evaluated using a teacher-created, content specific rubric
