3 INTERVIEW #1: RESIDENT Bret, 28, Graduate Business Student at Wake Forest, Resident Loved the collaboration between a youthful atmosphere and a historic district Moving well towards modernity Wishes it were more “neighborhood-like” “Sometimes, it genuinely feels like a big tourist attraction than an actual community.” Hanes Park is a huge plus Could be more artsy: “Winston-Salem is very much an art town, I’ve noticed, and the West End needs to embrace that a little more.” Homelessness is a minor problem in certain sections Wishes to see more involvement in solving the problems of the city from people on the West End, who have always been cordial and generous, for the most part

4 INTERVIEW #2: EMPLOYEE Rebecca, 38, Employee at Burke Street Pizza Has lived and worked in the area on and off for over a decade Seen lots of change in the past few years with the historical district, reinvigorating it to become one of Winston-Salem’s biggest go-to places Farmer’s Market: “There’s a bar [City Beverage] that holds one from April until November, but I miss the long, street-length farmer’s market held all year round” Didn’t find as many problems with the area; relatively content with her living and working situation, and loves the area Great business area that could use some more color Inclusion of Hanes Park makes the area “exceptional mixture of recreational spaces and social attractions,” but would love to see more natural landscapes in the area

5 INTERVIEW 3: EMPLOYEE Early 30’s Female Employee at Awake Church Working in West End for 7 years Enjoys more laid back atmosphere than downtown Has enjoyed changes with interesting shops moving into area Wishes there were less unused buildings and stores Sees homelessness as an issue in area Wishes there was a more accessible area or system for recycling and making the area clean

6 INTERVIEW 4: EMPLOYEE AND LONG TIME PATRON OF AREA Mid 60’s employee of Brookstown Antiques and Consignment where he has frequented for 30+ years Enjoys the addition of stores and restaurants since first being in West End Would like to see more greenery in area Would like less unused buildings but restored instead of torn down Also mentioned issue of homelessness Would like area to be cleaner and fresher looking Thinks with changes area could bring in more tourists

7 INSPIRATION FROM 90% Zabalean Waste Recycling As city of Cairo grew problem of recycling and garbage grew Solution was to have women and girls, who generally are required to stay at home, be taught to recover and recycle Materials Took a problem of garbage and turned it into solution for people to earn money while helping community

8 ADAPTATION FROM TEXT TO WEST END PROBLEM Problem of homelessness and cleanliness Use model of having normally excluded population help community and better themselves Having a center that takes in recycling from community, uses an previously unused space, and employs and empowers homeless could solve many problems

9 INSPIRATION 2 FROM 90% Abalimi Bezekhaya “Farmers or Planters of the Home” Cape Town Flats community with high unemployment Taught to grow vegetables for survival then surplus Famers plant and cultivate common plants and vegetables which can be distributed out.

10 ADAPTATION FROM TEXT TO WEST END PROBLEM Residents of West End would like more greenery and also a larger farmers market With a small to medium community garden could add green to area Region could also be worked by homeless On weekends produce and other goods could be sold at a community farmers market at the garden area
