2  MANY PEOPLE DO NOT VIEW COMIC BOOKS AS LITERATURE  THERE ARE MANY REASONS FOR THIS LACK OF APPRECIATION  COMIC BOOKS ARE OFTEN VIEWED AS CHILDISH AND IMMATURE FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS, BUT AN EXPLORATION OF WHAT THEY ARE, WHERE THEY COME FROM, AND AN UNDERSTANDING OF THEIR CRITICAL PRAISE CAN HELP CHANGE THIS PUBLIC PARADIGM

4 Above: Gundam Wing A popular “Mecha Manga/anime”  JAPANESE “MANGA” TRANSLATED AS “IRRESPONSIBLE PICTURES” ARE JAPAN’S COMIC BOOKS. BELOW ARE SOME MANGAS THAT HAVE BECOME POPULAR JAPANESE ANIMATIONS AKA: ANIME  JAPAN DOES NOT HAVE COMPARABLE LARGE COMIC BOOK PUBLISHERS TO THE UNITED STATES’ DC AND MARVEL.

5  COMIC BOOKS ARE FREQUENTLY DEFINED AS “SEQUENTIAL ART”  COMIC BOOKS USUALLY HAVE STAPLE BINDING, WHILE “GRAPHIC NOVELS” ARE PERMANENT-BOUND HARD OR SOFT COVER BOOKS  COMIC BOOKS ARE MORE THAN JUST MEN AND WOMEN IN BRIGHT TIGHTS AND COLORFUL CAPES. THERE ARE MANY COMIC BOOKS THAT DEAL WITH MORE MATURE AND REALISTIC THEMES

6  A VAST MAJORITY OF THE MOST POPULAR COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS WERE CREATED BY PEOPLE OF JEWISH DESCENT  STAN LEE: FANTASTIC FOUR, SPIDER- MAN, AND THE MAJORITY OF MARVEL’S UNIVERSE  JOE SHUSTER AND JERRY SIEGEL: SUPERMAN  BOB KANE: BATMAN

7 STAN LEE: RECOGNIZABLE FROM NUMEROUS MARVEL MOVIE CAMEOS THE CREATORS OF THE QUINTESSENTIAL SUPERHERO: THE MAN OF STEEL/ SUPERMAN BOB KANE AND MICHAEL KEATON AS BATMAN

8  THERE ARE COMICS THAT HAVE RECEIVED PRAISE AS GREAT LITERATURE, BUT THEY DON’T ALWAYS HAVE SUPERHEROES  SOME COMIC BOOKS ARE HISTORICAL, AND SOME ARE USED TO IN SCHOOLS TODAY TO EDUCATE STUDENTS BEYOND ELEMENTRY OR EVEN HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION LEVELS  GRAPHIC NOVELS LIKE WATCHMEN, MAUS, PERSEPOLIS, BUDDHA AND ASTRO BOY HAVE WON AWARDS LIKE THE PULITZER, HUGO AWARD AND TIME MAGAZINE RECOGNITION

10  PULITZER PRIZE WINNER 1992  NATIONAL BOOKS CRITICS: “NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD FOR BIOGRAPHY” WINNER

11  USED AS COURSE MATERIAL IN SOME HIGHER EDUCATION ESTABLISHMENTS  PORTION LISTED IN TIME MAGAZINE’S “BEST COMICS OF 2003”
