Epistle of James February 3, 2013 Bob Eckel 1 James 1:9-12 “The Value in the Testing of Your Faith” James 1:9,10 – ‘Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation, but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away.’ –Here we see a contrast between the lowly and the rich. –Can it be presumed that brother is a spiritual brother? Yes, for the lowly but is the rich also a brother in the Lord? –How should we interpret lowly? Let’s look at Matt 11:29, Luke 1:52, II Cor 10:1, I Peter 5:5 In the Greek the word signifies both lowliness of mind and lowness of condition, but in context lowly is to be understood as condition. –Especially of such a low estate as we experience to further the gospel. –What does it mean to glory in one’s exaltation? To glory in one’s exaltation here indicates that the poor man who is lifted up should rejoice because his faith has been repeatedly tried and proven true.

Epistle of James February 3, 2013 Bob Eckel 2 James 1:9-12 “The Value in the Testing of Your Faith” –but the rich in his humiliation rich is presumably wealth not all that believers have In Christ. humiliation – autos tapeinōsis is to make yourself low –Why is this scenario so often the case? –What kind of humiliation is this? –because as a flower of the field he will pass away. Why this metaphor? –Isaiah 40:6-8; James 4:14; I Peter 1:24 Again, is the rich man also a brother? –Yes – Phil 3:7,8; I Tim 6:17 –No – Phil 3:18,19 –Either way you can’t take it with you! James 1:11 – ‘ For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits.’

Epistle of James February 3, 2013 Bob Eckel 3 James 1:9-12 “The Value in the Testing of Your Faith” –‘no sooner has the sun risen’…‘but it withers’… ‘falls’ – all aorist active indicative or self-controlled Col 1:16 – ‘For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.’ Again Isaiah 40:6-8; Jonah 4:8; Job 1:18,19 –‘its beautiful appearance’ or ‘the grace of the fashion of it’ grace here is euprepeia, only NT use. –perishes Strong's Number G622 matches the Greek ἀ π ό λλυμι (apollymi) occurs 100 times in 86 verses in the Greek concordance of the KJV –Must be important –‘So the rich man also will fade away’ fade away – future passive indicative and in his ways or pursuits –What does this indicate?

Epistle of James February 3, 2013 Bob Eckel 4 James 1:9-12 “The Value in the Testing of Your Faith” Psalm 49:6-14, Job 21:23-30; Luke 12:16-21, 16:19-25; James 5:1-7 Relate this to our citizenship! - James 1:8, I Tim 6:17 James 1:12 – ‘Blessed [is] the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.’ –This makes you think of the beatitudes, but ‘blessed is the man’ is used 16 times in scripture and all but two are in the OT, and Rom 4:8 is a direct quotation form Psalm 32:2. –‘endures temptation’ – present active indicative preserves, remains, abides temptation – is this temptation to sin and/or our response to trials? –anything that tests our faith – see James 1:2-4 »Here our response to trials seems best, but then there’s James 1:13,14 –I like to think trials are given to prove who we really are In Christ.

Epistle of James February 3, 2013 Bob Eckel 5 James 1:9-12 “The Value in the Testing of Your Faith” »In fact then it says ‘and when he is tried or approved’ - of what? »That we are In Christ! ‘he will receive the crown of life’ –What is the crown of life (zōē)? »A metaphor that is the eternal blessedness which will be given as a prize to those whose servitude has been In Christ. »James 2:5; I Cor 9:25; II Tim 4:8 –And this is something that the Lord has promised to them that love Him. »Love is agapaō – and from whence is this sourced? –I Peter 4:13 – ‘But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when His glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.’
