1. Your cousin Pauline, once a proud microwave chef, has taken to dining out a lot more often and using her toaster oven for the leftovers. She recently learned of the dangers of radiation, thanks to rising awareness of the dangers of tanning booths and even recent disasters at nuclear power plants, and is concerned that her microwave could pose a threat to her own health. What should Pauline know about these different forms of radiation? Which forms are dangerous and why? Can you convince her to return to her microwaving ways?

 emit EM waves around the same frequency as those of many cordless telephones and WiFi routers  Field trip! http://www.teachersdom ain.org/asset/npe11_vi d_emmicro/ Please view the video and type ‘back’ when you return to the seminar National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Science Mission Directorate. 6  2. explain to Pauline what she is “seeing” in these images, and how infra-red radiation differs from that used for X-ray imaging. National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Science Mission Directorate. (2010). Infrared energy

 Only electromagnetic wave visible to the human eye  Field trip!  http://www.teachers domain.org/asset/np e11_vid_emvisible/ http://www.teachers domain.org/asset/np e11_vid_emvisible/  Please view the video and type ‘back’ when you return to the seminar

 1 Hz to 300 Hz  Sources include power lines, electronics, and electrical wiring  Research indicates potential health risks including: - cancer - hormonal disruption -Reproductive disruption -Cardiovascular problems -Behavioral issues -Cognitive impairment Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) Radiation 2010

3. What are some of the controversies concerning the dangers of extremely low-frequency (ELF) radiation? Do you think this is a topic you should discuss with your cousin Pauline?
