6 PHYSICAL EDUCATION 817-215-0802 FOR THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILD IT IS IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES: 1. Students will wear tennis shoes during P.E. (no flip-flop, backless, high platform or slip-on style shoes, boots or crocs will be allowed). 2. Shoes must be tied; tucking in loose laces may cause injury to your child or others. 3. Shorts must be worn under dresses and skirts. Students who do not comply with the dress code will be doing an alternate P.E. activity for that day. **Gym shoes may be stored in back packs or lockers for a quick change. If your child is injured or ill, he/she must have a note (from home) to be excused from P.E. activities. After five days, a doctor's note will be required specifying the length of time he/she will be excused. 9 Independent Reading: Million Words Challenge Justin Elementary

11 Million Words a Year Campaign To help students develop the habits of good readers To create excitement about reading every day To support students in becoming more proficient readers

Will send home as soon as set!

13 How Can I Help? Encourage your child to read one million words during the school year. Help your child keep track of the books you read at home on his/her log. Volunteer to help your child’s grade level keep track of their progress.

14 CUB Binder The CUB is designed to assist children with their organizational skills as well as aide in the communication between school and home. There will be a Grading Period calendar to communicate important school events and behavior notes. We ask parents or guardians look at the CUB each night and discuss with their children events that occurred during the day as well as what homework needs to be completed. This is also an area where communication between you and your child’s teacher can occur. Each child is expected to keep the CUB during the school year.

16 Guided Reading and Literature Circles Students will be formally assessed 3 times a year using the Developmental Reading Assessment, and they will be placed into similar groups for Guided Reading. These groups are flexible and students can move from one level to another rather quickly.

17 Reading/Writing Projects Throughout the year students will be reading a variety of genres and creating inquiry circles. These are things they will be choosing to learn about. Students will be creating and completing several projects by the end of the school year.

24 HOMEWORK All fourth graders will be assigned homework on Monday. We believe this helps develop good study habits and responsibility. Homework will be a review or a reinforcement of skills learned in class. It may also serve as enrichment to a daily lesson, or may promote a particular thinking skill. YEAR LONG – Reading Log – Located in CUB –A minimum of 20 minutes a night and a minimum 3 complete sentence response –Suggested – Million Word Challenge –Must be signed weekly YEAR LONG – Spelling – Menu is located in CUB –Students choose different pieces to accumulate a total of 101 points. YEAR LONG – Math – Given weekly on Monday –Spiral Review of items that may not be revisited in class As needed – additional may come home All homework is to be turned in on Friday. If your child is missing the homework assignment, check out teacher’s website!

26 4 th Grade Expectations Follow directions quickly and quietly the first time given. Raise your hand and wait for permission to speak during instruction time. Keep comments and actions positive, kind, and encouraging. (This includes keeping hands, feet, and other objects to yourself.) Have all necessary materials ready, including homework and supplies. Walk in a single file line and wait quietly in the halls.

29 ATTENDANCE Your child’s education is our top priority. His/her punctual, daily attendance is of the utmost importance to their academic success. Our school day begins promptly at 7:45 a.m. Any students arriving after 7:45 a.m. must be checked in at our office and will be considered tardy. We understand that sometimes illnesses prevent children from attending school. In this case, please contact our office at (817) 215-0800 or (940) 648-2255 to report the illness prior to 9:00 a.m. Students arriving at school after 9:30 a.m. will be considered absent for the day. In the case of illness, your child will be responsible for all lessons taught during the time missed. Please make arrangements with his/her teacher to make up missed work. Please try to schedule all appointments after school, or either early am or late pm. Maximize instruction time.
