THE CITY a field group project S. Darby L. Morgan W. Mortimer J. Kennard

We had the idea that we wanted to create a map with interactive elements as it linked directly to our theme. We then researched Artist maps for inspiration

Nikki Rosato We looked at Nikki Rossato, her designs for new uses with a road map really add a new depth and layer to the land article itself.

The Proposal For this group project we have planned our project around the theme migration. Our group wants to make an interactive fixture where the users communicating with it, building the environment, will create and change the actual outcome. For research we will first person ask people, Where is your favourite place in Cardiff? Or Where would you bring someone who was new to the city? The research will actually create the map. The elements will be assembled as our research furthers.

Map Legends For the interactive element: “Where is your favorite place in Cardiff?” For our map we wanted to create a legend to categorize the main types of places people will go.

For a general idea for the legends we wanted to create for out ‘map’ we undertook some research to ask people where their favorite place in Cardiff was. The top result was Roath Park having 7 out of the 35 people we asked say there.

 From this we made a list and chose colures and designed logos for the areas.  Museums (and Monuments)  Parks and Recreation  Gardens  Castles  Fitness  Home  University (Study Areas)  Coffee Shops and Food  Other (e.g bars, clubs, bus/train station)

The Map Legends

We used recycled materials, leaflets flyers, posters and magazines you would find on the streets within Cardiff to gain a ground level view of the city onto our map.

The process.

Our physical outcome for this presentation is a visual representation of our Idea. An idea of sharing information and personal knowledge with other people specific to place. For example we chose the city of Cardiff as our base map as that is the city as we currently live in, but also we wanted to be able to share with students as a good way to get to know a city that may not be familiar.

Other applications of our idea School – From our making of the piece we found that placing each part together gave us a much better understanding of Cardiff. We all found that there was a lot more to Cardiff then what we had assumed. And piecing it together almost like a jigsaw helped to teach us more about the layout of areas that create the city. This gave us the Idea we could try and donate the piece to a Primary School as a tool for teaching Young children more of the city they live in.

Social Media Website Another application for our idea was to create a social media website to share your favorite bits about the city. Possible features of this website could be:  Connect with your friends – share stories about place that you have visited  Location tagging – tagging locations that you visit and being able to share them with people you are connected with
