The Best Choice to Measure Reading Progress

What is SRI? Scholastic Reading Inventory TM Scholastic Reading Inventory TM (SRI) is a research-based, computer-adaptive reading assessment that measures comprehension on The Lexile Framework ® for Reading to inform instruction, monitor progress, and forecast outcomes.

Why SRI is Important SRI is an effective assessment to: Identify struggling readers Establish growth goals for students Use as a universal screener Monitor progress toward goals at benchmarked times Determine effectiveness of instruction and curriculum

Assessment Plan Considerations

Assessments to Guide Adolescent Literacy Instruction: Center on Instruction (p.54) www.centeroninstruction.org SRI

…the definition of academic literacy includes not only the ability to read text for initial understanding but also the ability to think about its meaning in order to answer questions that may require the student to make inferences or draw conclusions. (p. 3) Torgesen, Houston, Rissman, et al., 2007 as referenced in Assessments to Guide Adolescent Literacy Instruction (p. 7), Center on Instruction SRI: Assessment of Academic Literacy

SRI Maximizes Technology to Reach Goals Computer-adaptive test— yields the most accurate score in the shortest amount of time Server test administration from any workstation— provides quick and easy access for all Automatic scoring and reporting— Provides immediate, actionable data in pre-formatted reports Scalable— Supports 700 concurrent users

Understanding The Lexile Framework ® for Reading

The Lexile Framework for Reading The Lexile Framework for Reading ® Provides an objective scientific measurement of reading comprehension Places reader and text on the same developmental scale Research-based and proven to drive reading achievement Provides a common language to measure growth of reading ability

Developed by MetaMetrics, Inc. Scientifically created readability formula for leveling texts and understanding text demand Built on a corpus of more than 100,000 books and 80 million articles Measures 28 million students annually Links to national tests: ITBS, TerraNova, SAT-9, SAT-10 Connects assessment to instruction The Lexile Framework for Reading The Lexile Framework for Reading ® The Most Widely Used and Respected Common Scale to Measure Comprehension

The Lexile Framework for Reading The Lexile Framework for Reading ® TEXT DEMAND –The Lexile Analyzer, operated by MetaMetrics, provides a LEXILE score for texts. –The Lexile Analyzer measures word frequency and sentence complexity to create a score for the texts. READER ABILITY –The SRI, developed by Scholastic in conjunction with MetaMetrics, generates a NATIVE LEXILE SCORE for students. The Lexile Analyzer + SRI = the Lexile Framework

How SRI Works How SRI Works A Computer Adaptive Assessment Embedded completion-item format Uses passages of authentic literature SRI Technical Guide p. 22

How SRI Works Does NOT require: Prior knowledge of ideas outside of the passage Vocabulary taken out of context Features questions that are: Posed in a consistent format Field tested and validated Compliant with Standards of  Universal Design and Fair Access

The Educator’s Experience

Welcome to Scholastic Achievement Manager

SAM–Easy-to-Use Interface ROSTER–Easily manage and enroll users and settings REPORTS–Aggregate data, generate reports, analyze data RESOURCES–Access SRI Technical Manuals BOOKS–Access information and metrics

District/School Proficiency Report Quickly and visually indicates level of proficiencies. Shows the numbers of students and percentage of students at each proficiency level.

Student Yearly Progress Report Graphic representation of the growth of individual student, with mean for grade level and grade level proficiency depicted.

Student Action Report Quick profile of each student Independent reading and instructional reading recommendation For goal setting For student and/or parent conferences For an intervention plan

Targeted Reading Report Use this report to assign appropriate materials to foster growth

Using Data

SRI National Norms

Case Studies: Intra-Year Goals  Jillian, a 5th grader, took the SRI in the fall, and received a score of 880L.  She is a motivated student who would like to reach the ADVANCED category.  For Jillian to reach this level she would need to grow at least 275L in Grade 5.

Case Studies: AYP Goals  Travis is a 9th grader with a Lexile score of 1040L in the spring.  To demonstrate that Travis has shown adequate growth, his 10 th grade score would need to be 1080L.  Travis needs to improve his SRI score by 40L to maintain the proficiency range.

Case Studies: Intervention Goals  Lily received an 325L at the end of Grade 4.  To reach the midpoint for Grade 5, she would need to demonstrate 485L growth in one calendar year.  To reach midpoint for Grade 6, she would need to grow a total of 535L.  How will Lily and her teacher accomplish this? Create two years goals with annual benchmarks Grade 5 = 267L improvement (592L) Grade 6 = another 268L improvement (880L) 40.

Progress Monitoring + Common Scale

Using Data With SRI, teachers can: Understand and forecast where student are tracking toward expected grade level outcomes Modify instruction to set obtainable goals Apply ongoing assessment in RTI framework Have a common language to discuss progress
