GCOM-W1,AMSR-E/ADEOS-II Project Update in EORC GCOM Research Group in EORC Masato Yamanashi 29 th June 2011, NCDC,Asheville, NC

Japanese FY * FY2009FY2010FY2011FY2012FY2013FY2014 Major Milestones RA Algorithm Homepages & Data Distribute Cal/Val RA #1 (W1)RA #3 (W1+Multi-sensor research)RA #5 Development PrototypingImplementationTesting/Optimization Keep(AMSR-E)&Preparation (sites, tools, methodologies) Operational Issue RA#3 (W1+Multi) W1 Launch V.1 GEOV.1 TB Criteria #1 ( Revise every 1.5 or 2 years after launch) Algorithm selection (standard products) PreparationOperation/Improvement EORC GCOM Group main tasks and its schedules

Standard Algorithms ・ 3 rd RA announced on 21 st January, 2011 and closed on 25 th March ・ Research areas(Categories): - GCOM-W1 research: algorithm development, validation, and application research - Multi-sensor research: multi-sensor algorithm development and application research Status of 3 rd RA ・ The conclusion of Selection will be announced soon, (at early August)

Top page of Data Distribute System Developed by GCOM project Group Data Distribution System

Select the data from the following choices – Data Categories, the sort of physical parameters( like SST,SSW and so on) – Satellite or Sensors, etc Using shopping trolley icons, more user-friendly Format exchange functions AMSR/AMSR-E are HDF4,AMSR2 is HDF5, provided by these original format basically. – GeoTIFF,TIFF – netCDF(netCDF 4 classic model,CF-1.4) – HDF5(for AMSR-E/AMSR only) Features of this system

Data Distribution System We will provide standard products through Data Distribution System( using online, http, sftp) – Start to provide AMSR-E/AMSR2 soon (plan) – RA research and cooperate organizations Start to provide after initial checkout( 3month after the launch) – Other users Start to provide after the calibration/validation phase ( 1 year after the launch) Provide plan

LevelContents Level-1A Swath data with geolocation information Scene counts ½ orbit starting from northern/southern-most latitudes Level-1B Swath data with geolocation information Brightness temperatures ½ orbit starting from northern/southern-most latitudes Level-1R Swath data with geolocation information Spatial-resolution matched brightness temperatures 4 resolution sets (6,10,23,36GHz) and raw swath for 89GHz A/B Level-2 Swath data with geolocation information Geophysical parameters (8 parameters) ½ orbit starting from northern/southern-most latitudes Leve-3 Grid data with 0.1/0.25 degrees (10/25km) resolution Brightness temperatures and geophysical parameters Daily and monthly temporal average Equidistant Cylindrical and Polar Stereo Projection All products are in HDF5 format. GCOM-W1 Processing Levels

Calibration/Validation Validation by utilizing the existing observation networks: – Radiosondes and GPS networks, SST and sea surface wind speed from various buoy system, Ground-based precipitation radar networks, Snow depth and other surface measurements by meteorological agencies, etc. Specific field campaigns/monitorings – Soil moisture test sites such as Mongolia, Thailand, and CEOP sites including Australia Murray-Darling Basin, and Snow depth test site in Yakutsuk. Potential interaction with other missions – SMOS and SMAP for soil moisture, GPM GV collaboration for precipitation.

-New AWS testing in Metrological Institute since the beginning of June, untill September - After test, will install to Murry Darling Basin, north-west part of Melbourne, in Australia Calibration/Validation (new tool)

Next PI meeting ・ Plan Around December or January in Tokyo, together with other project,GCOM-C, TRMM/GPM, EarthCARE, setting crosscutting discussion like the last year, (only plan, not discussed enoungh, not approved) choices are - Just after 3 rd RA selection, around September or October, 3 rd RA researhers only, introducing work plans each other. -Place ( Tokyo, or western part of Japan because of problems of reactors and radiation.)

AMSR-E HW Recent Trend (as of 21 st,June) Amplitude are a little bigger than before (pink) (Light blue) (yellow) (light green)

The following problem are because of aging - The antenna torque has been unstable than before - 89GHz-B Detector’s output voltage will reach upper limit soon ( expected, around this December) To make life longer - The operation to make the dynamic range of Tb a little narrow => details are reported EOC/MELCO AMSR-E HW information
