2 Personal Profile ‘Every eye is an eye, when you're doing the surgery there that is just as important as if you were doing eye surgery on the prime minster or the king.’. Fred Hollows was born in New Zealand, April 9 th, 1929. Unfortunately he died in Sydney, 1993 because of cancer. Fred thought he’d wanted to be a missionary, but he changed his mind after doing some work at a mental hospital. He enjoyed going camping, playing the trumpet and he also attended church. Towards the end of high school Fred was on the path to become a minister, however after high school he had a summer holiday job at a mental hospital which changed his outlook.

3 Fred Hollows Work Fred became famous for helping blind people gain eye sight.

4 Other Facts Fred Hollows was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science at Macqarie University in 1991. In 2010 he was on an Australian $1 coin. He has many things named after him such as, Schools, Awards, Streets and Gardens. “The essence of a human being is our capacity to help others; it is what separates us from the animals. I studied medicine so I could help others – set a leg or whatever, and it's given me a great deal of satisfaction.” The most expensive little bits of plastic in existence I hardly knew what a cataract was, but I was determined that in my training I would learn
