2 Proclivity = A natural tendency or disposition

3 From Merriam’s Learners Dictionary: formal : a strong natural liking for something that is usually bad : a tendency to do something that is usually bad examples: Some people have a proclivity for violence. She has a proclivity to assume the worst. He shows a proclivity towards aggression.

4 procrastinate (verb) = to put off doing something Merriam’s: to be slow or late about doing something that should be done

5 Prognosis (noun) = a prediction, especially about the outcome of a disease 1 : a doctor's opinion about how someone will recover from an illness or injury How does prognosis differ from diagnosis?

6 Projectile (noun) = a fired, thrown, or otherwise thrown object, such as a bullet or a rocket The javelin is an excellent example of a projectile. Once it leaves the thrower's hand, the only forces acting on it are air resistance and gravity.

7 Promontory (noun) = a headland; a peak of high land that juts out into a body of water

8 Prophecy (noun) = a prediction of the future, especially under the influence of divine guidance

11 P ART B Exclaim means “to call or cry out” Take off the prefix ex- and replace it with pro- So… proclaim means “to call forth, or in public” or to “announce or make known publicly” Learn these: provocation propel promote propose

12 R EVIEW PHOTO Which means turns to / away from light? Which means motion in response to light? Which means to measure light? Which means decomposing or loosening from light? Which means producing or generating light? Which means looking good in photographs?

13 H OW TO REVISE YOUR WRITING FOR STYLE … Check the point of view Check for action verbs (not be verbs) Revise deadwood… What’s deadwood? Answer: words that take up space but don’t add anything to the meaning of your message.

14 C UT OUT THE DEADWOOD! Deadwood: There is a fly in your soup. REVISED: Gross! A fly is swimming in your soup. REVISED: A fly just landed in your soup.

15 C UT OUT THE DEADWOOD! Deadwood: There is just too much to do. REVISED: I’ve got to clean the kitchen and grade the reports and go to the store and cook dinner and wash some laundry and mow the yard. Notice in the sentence above the use of polysyndeton – repeated conjunctions to emphasize the items in the list.
