What they believe in They believe in Liberty each person owns his or her own life and property. People should have the right to make his or own choices as to how they live their lives.

Political World Libertarian believe in rule of law. They believe in self-ownership and each individual should have the right to choice to control their own body in action, speech, and property and that the government role is to help the individuals to defend themselves from forces and fraud. This makes them liberal because they believe that the people should have the right to speak out and that the government role is just to help the individuals to defend themselves from their own force. " Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations -- entangling alliances with none." This echoed the advice of President George Washington that "the great rule of conduct for us in regard to foreign nations is, in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connection as possible."

Economic world Libertarian want all the members of the society to have abundant opportunities to achieve economic success. They believe that each person should have the right to offer goods and services to others on the free markets. They believe that the only role in government for the economy world is to protect property rights, adjudicate disputes, and provide a legal framework in which voluntary trade is protected. All efforts by the government to redistribute wealth, or to control or manage trade, are improper in a free society. This makes them a liberal world because they believe the government should control or manage trade and its improper for a free society.

Social World Libertarians value individual responsibility, and tolerate economic and social diversity. The best way to protect the environment is through respecting private property rights. A big government approach to the environment will only limit freedom and prosperity. Oil, coal, natural gas, nuclear power, and various other alternative energy sources should not be prohibited, over regulated, or subsidized by the government. Instead all forms of energy should be allowed to compete in the free-market. By increasing private property rights, libertarians would ensure a cleaner environment than we have now. Federal agencies like the EPA should be abolished. The free market offers quicker, more effective ways to clean the environment and more efficient and effective technologies. They are more liberal in this world because they do not want excessive government regulation and they believe there should be a free market in energy. "Libertarianism is, as the name implies, the belief in liberty. Libertarians believe that each person owns his own life and property and has the right to make his own choices as to how he lives his life – as long as he simply respects the same right of others to do the same." -- Sharon Harris, President, Advocates for Self-Government.

Cultural World Libertarians believe the only role of government or comparable agency is to protect freedom of contract and strict private property rights wherever possible. Immigration is a controversial issue on which reasonable and principled people may disagree. Even within the libertarian movement, there are disagreements about the role and necessity of the state. Many intelligent libertarians argue that government-defined borders are unnecessary. As such, free people should be allowed to move freely, so long as they don’t violate anyone else’s property rights through trespass. If there is a market for these individuals in a certain location, they will be there. If there is not a market for their skills and culture, they will move away. The current immigration law is too restrictive, and should be revised in a more open way, but the rule of law must be enforced. They are more liberal in this world because they believe that everyone has the right to do what they want as long as others' rights are not threatened or violated. “We want government to largely leave us alone, protect our personal security, but then to butt-out, leave us free to pursue our hopes and dreams, as long as we don't hurt anybody else.” – John Stossel, Host of “Stossel” on Fox Financial News Network, and author of Myths, Lies and Downright Stupidity.

Liberal & Conservative LiberalConservative Libertarians believe that human nature cannot be legislated away and only harm to others should be illegal. They believe in limited government and don’t want much intervention. Desire to conserve, and a general suspicion of social change. Value the importance of tradition and the accumulated wisdom of the past.
