Fandango first introduced the Bag Puppets in 2003 and over the years they've garnered a huge following. The colorful characters have entertained moviegoers around the country. Copyright © 2014 Cindy Zack

Chromosomal analysis of the Fandango has revealed that they have 8 pairs of chromosomes for a total of 16. In this activity, you will assist in the reproduction of Fandango offspring. You will have the opportunity to observe all of the offspring produced by 3 different sets of Fandango parents. Copyright © 2014 Cindy Zack

The parents are heterozygous for all eight traits. You will use the parent genes, which are labeled on chromosome strips, to determine your offspring’s genotypes. The capital letters represent the dominant alleles and the lowercase letters represent the recessive alleles. Copyright © 2014 Cindy Zack

After determining your Fandango’s genotypes and phenotypes you will construct it. You and your partner will be responsible for bringing in “clothing” for your Fandango offspring. Copyright © 2014 Cindy Zack

Pick the Parents! Randomly pick a letter from the brown paper bag. This will be the parent couple you will represent in this project! Copyright © 2014 Cindy Zack

Meet the Parents! You will be representing one of the couples revealed on the front board. Record the names of the parents in the chart: Your Fandango Offspring: Genotypes and Phenotypes Copyright © 2014 Cindy Zack

You will need a “Mother” envelope and a “Father” envelope. Copyright © 2014 Cindy Zack

1. Divide your group into two. One person will be the Mother and the other person the Father. The Mother should take the “Mother” envelope and the father should take the “Father” envelope. Copyright © 2014 Cindy Zack

2. Remove all of the pieces from the envelope. Take the longest pairs of orange (Father) and red (Mother) chromosomes and place them FACE DOWN on your desks so that you cannot see the letters. Arrange the strips from tallest to shortest. Put them in number order. Copyright © 2014 Cindy Zack

3. WITHOUT TURNING THE CHROMOSOMES OVER, each parent picks up the two longest strips numbered #1. 1111 Copyright © 2014 Cindy Zack

Each parent shuffles their strips and randomly chooses one. Place the other strip in the discard pile. 1 1 Copyright © 2014 Cindy Zack

4. On the DATA SHEET, record the letter found on the ORANGE chromosome in the Father column. Record the letter found on the RED chromosome in the Mother column. Be sure you copy the letters exactly. Aa EXAMPLE Copyright © 2014 Cindy Zack

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until all chromosome strips have been used. Aa EXAMPLE Copyright © 2014 Cindy Zack

6. After filling out the DATA SHEET, return all chromosomes to their proper envelopes. Body PartFatherMotherGenotypePhenotype Hair (color) Hair (type) Eyes Nose Lips Freckles Ears Eyebrows Sex Copyright © 2014 Cindy Zack

7. Determine the GENOTYPE by combining the 2 letters you chose from Father and Mother. 8. Record the PHENOTYPE for each characteristic, using the key provided on the Fandango Genotypes and Phenotypes page. 18 Think about a name for the Fandango offspring that starts with the letter of the parents you chose from the bag. Tomorrow: Build Your Fandango Offspring Working with your partner, you will use the phenotypes to construct a Fandango offspring. All materials for the project will be provided EXCEPT clothing. Remember to bring in clothes for your Fandango to wear! Copyright © 2014 Cindy Zack

Today you will begin building your Fandango offspring. Each team will get 1 brown paper bag. Use the phenotype data table as a “shopping list”. Go the letter station of the parents you are representing and gather your materials. Happy building!! Copyright © 2014 Cindy Zack
