3 If you took a snapshot of your health, what would it look like? Are you feeling well? Are you alert, well rested, and have a positive outlook? Are you getting along with family, class mates, and teachers? Did you get enough to eat? Getting plenty of exercise?

4 Answers to these and other questions provide a picture of your general health. Most people think that health is the absence of sickness. Health is much more than that! Health: Is the combination of your physical, mental, emotional, and social well being.

5 Three Elements Of Your Health. I. Physical Physical Health: The way parts and systems of your body work together. You need: Proper Nutrition Regular physical activity Enough rest & sleep Get regular medical & dental checkups Pay attention to what you put into your body, resist tobacco, drugs, alcohol, and sexual activity

6 II. Mental & Emotional Health. Mental & Emotional Health: Includes feelings about yourself and how well you meet life's demands. You need: To be in touch with your feelings and express them in appropriate, healthful ways. Accept responsibility for your actions Stand up for beliefs and values Enjoy learning, know that striving for information is a life long process. Know that your mistakes are opportunities to learn and grow Use your mind to develop thinking skills.

7 III. Social Health. Social Health: The way you get along with others. You need: The ability to make and keep friends. To play and work cooperatively with others. To lend support when necessary. This involves communicating well and showing respect for yourself and others.

8 The Health Triangle. Wellness is an overall state of well being or total health. Physical Social Mental/Emotional

9 Health Continuum. ( See pg. 7 in text) Your health is dynamic and fluctuates along a continuum. A continuum is like a yard stick. Your health can be located at any of many different points from day to day.

10 Life Style Factors. These are the personal behaviors and habits related to the way a person lives, that determines their level of health.

11 Seven Important Life Style Factors. 1. Get 8-10 hours of sleep per night. 2. Eat a variety of nutritious foods everyday. 3. Avoid smoking and tobacco products. 4. Eat breakfast daily. 5. Get 20-30minutes of vigorous nonstop activity, 5 times a week. 6. Avoid alcohol, drugs, and sexual activity. 7. Maintain your recommended weight.

12 Being A Health Literate Person. A health literate person has the capacity to obtain, interpret, and understand basic health information and service. 1. A Critical Thinker/Problem Solver: Evaluates information from reliable sources before making a decision. 2. A Responsible & Productive Citizen: Chooses safe, healthful, and legal behaviors. 3. A Self Directed Learner: Gathers and uses accurate, current health information. 4. An Effective Communicator: Expresses knowledge, beliefs, and ideas in a variety of forms.
