Warm-up How do Engineers read? Objective: Review and demonstrate understanding of the effects that Computer-Aided Design (CAD) has on every part of the process of design

Reading like an Engineer  Engineers read back and forth between the text and visual diagrams because the visuals are essential for deep understanding of concepts.  Engineers think critically and visualize while reading about information that is changing from one form to another.  Engineers look for patterns during reading to acquire deeper understanding.  Engineers make conjectures during reading to begin creating fresh ideas.  Engineers create questions based on facts and data about what they are observing.  Engineers make predictions based on what they read.  Engineers visualize during reading.  Engineers use imagery during reading to project concepts into their thinking.

CAD Review Traditional drawing tools include T-square Drawing board Plastic Triangle The parts of a CAD workstation include: Computer Keyboard Display Screen Drawing Tablet Plotter

CAD Review Traditional drawing methods are used to draw or design: Portraits still life and landscape art Animals and detailed living things CAD is used to design: Cars, aircraft, furniture, rugs, and other textiles and electronic games

CAD Review CAD is an important software application that allows people to produce drawings using a computer instead of traditional drafting tools. CAD saves time by combining designing and drafting into a single process When using CAD the SIZE, SHAPE and SCALE of final drawings can be easily modified

Designers can create physical 3-D scale models using 3-D printing machines

Using CAD versus Traditional Drawing Methods Graphic Organizer Traditional/Hand DrawnCAD

Learn to use Sketchup Logon to your school network account. Go to ‘Angela Bernard’ Hand-Out folder Go to the Sketchup Folder and complete the 3 tutorials Save your tutorial designs in your class’ folder in the ‘Angela Bernard’ Hand-In folder. Include your name and the date in the file name Example: ‘Bernard Part 1 - 11122012’ Open a new file in Sketchup and recreate your candy dispenser design Obtain objects from the 3D Warehouse to represent the parts in your Inventors’ kit. Save designs in your class’ folder and include your name and the word ‘Dispenser’ in the file name Example: ‘Bernard Dispenser’ 1ed
