2 What is Hands on Support? sharing good practice in the use of ICT to enhance teaching and learning classroom based support for teachers differentiated support, suited to individual teachers’ needs support that goes beyond basic skills and technology releasing value from prior investment in ICT infrastructure, equipment, connectivity and training

4 What is the HOS diagnostic tool? A self-evaluation and action planning tool which aims to help schools: identify staff who may benefit from HOS identify staff who may become HOS providers identify staff who may benefit from basic ICT skills training

5 Why should teachers use the diagnostic tool? allows them to evaluate their approach to ICT creates an individual action plan for each teacher provides HOS manager with a report on all staff to help them make decisions about maximising the value they get from the HOS programme

23 First group These teachers probably need to improve their basic skills and confidence to use ICT before embarking on HOS support. Second group These staff have sufficient personal skills to gain from Hands on Support. The school needs to decide from the profile of these staff who would benefit from HOS support, given the resources available and the needs of the school. Third group Could be potential Hands on Support Providers.

24 The HOS Matrix has been designed to help schools think about how to make best use of the resources available to them. The groupings of teachers shown on the previous slide are only indicative. Schools should exercise judgement and interpret the results using common sense and their own knowledge of staff. For example: –teachers at the top end of category 2 may have the right skills to be Hands on Support providers.
