3 Objective:  You will evaluate multiple perspectives in deciding whether the Mexican/American War was an act of U.S. Imperialism.  You will understand the causes of the U.S. Civil War in order better to understand the effects.  11.1.4 Students examine the effects of the Civil War and Reconstruction and of the industrial revolution, including demographic shifts and the emergence in the late nineteenth century of the United States as a world power.

8 On-demand Writing Task (15 min)  Pick a side and argue either that the Mexican/American War was OR was not an act of U.S. Imperialism.  Discuss the best opposing argument.  Tie it into the historical context in terms of U.S. Westward expansion and the start of the Civil War.

9 Effects of Civil War Group Work  In groups, master Chapter 12 in the textbook (pages 422-447).  Try to anticipate what kind of questions the state would ask.  11.1.4 Students examine the effects of the Civil War and Reconstruction and of the industrial revolution, including demographic shifts and the emergence in the late nineteenth century of the United States as a world power.
