2 Introduction You are the aid to a state representative and the Colorado House of Representatives is debating a new bill which would outlaw capital punishment. Your job is to write a report for your representative to inform them about capital punishment. Start your report around the time of the French Revolution and cover the death penalty up to the present.

3 Task Start your report with an account of the guillotine’s history. It will be your task to find some details and statistics related to the use of the guillotine during the time of the French Revolution. Next, discuss America’s capital punishment policy and list some related facts. Finally, sum up your findings in a paragraph that include your personal opinion on the death penalty. Throughout the report it will be your responsibility to answer a series of related questions.

4 Process Use the websites on the page entitled links to research the death penalty and to formulate your report. Be thorough and accurate in your report. Only include your personal opinion(s) of the death penalty towards the end of your report. Make sure your report addresses all of the provided questions.

5 Q and A’s for Your Report You must answer the following questions within your article. 1.Who invented the guillotine and how did it work? 2.Who was being guillotined during the French Revolution? -Give at least three names of important historical figures that were executed. 3.Why was the guillotine the preferred form of execution during the French Revolution? 4.At what time in history were the most people guillotined? - Hint it was not during the French Revolution. 5.When was the last recorded execution by guillotine and where was it preformed?

6 Q and A’s Continued 6.What types or forms of capital punishment are still used in America? -List at least three forms or types of capital punishment and the states in which they are still considered legal today. -Discuss the debate about the 8th amendment (cruel and unusual punishment) 7.How many states today still have the death penalty? 8.Does the use of the death penalty as a deterrent work (for or against)? 9.Examine the possible conviction of those who are innocent. 10.Discuss the Discrimination (based on ethnicity, class or gender) of death penalty convictions. 11.Do you agree with capital punishment why or why not?
