4 Location Selection: Locations should be chosen with the following factor’s in consideration:  Lighting – (Depending on the hours of the operation) Street lights, light towers, portable lights etc…  Roadway of sufficient width or improved shoulders - Must keep in consideration not only space for vehicles entering exiting the checkpoint area, also patrol cars, wreckers and support vehicles needed to conduct any operation. Areas to move vehicles out of lanes for enforcement activities.  Unobstructed view for approaching traffic – avoid areas with blind approaches caused by hills or curves in the roadway.  Locations should be chosen with sufficient parking for officer’s and support personnel. i.e. Wreckers, EMS personnel etc…

17 Data Collection and Operational Evaluation: Data (stats) collection is imperative to any checkpoint operation. Without this information an agency can not evaluate effectiveness of a checkpoint program. Choose offenses or charges that your agency wants tracked specifically. These charges or offenses may be dictated by grant requirements or specific issues being addressed in your particular area.

18 Reports: Monthly activity reports and reports on specific operations should be totaled and kept for future reference and release to the media. These can be compared to each other by totals and dates, to assist in future planning of additional events. Media stations, newspapers or local information circulations are good sources to not only advertise checkpoint operations but to also report activity. Results illustrate to the public the purpose checkpoints. The proof is in the results and are the individual agencies message about their commitment to their traffic safety program.
