Instructions & Example

2. Introduction
In this project you will adopt an element from the periodic table.
As the proud new parent of your element, you will create a baby book to remember each stage of your element’s life.
This counts as a 100-point assessment (test) grade. Pay special attention to the required details so you gain all of your points.
Some parts need to be done on the computer and some by hand.

3. Process / Parts
Research your. Use your research to complete your Fact Sheet document in Google Classroom.
Fill out the bibliography to report your sources.
Design and create your project using your Fact Sheet (instructions in this presentation).
Present your project to the class.

8. Part 2: CREATIVE Section When I grow up
What are your element’s dreams for the future? Write a paragraph of 8 sentences or more, explain the following.
Career choice ( When your element grows up, what does it want to be used for? How will it spend its time? Where will it live? What will it do in the future?)
**Make sure your element’s dreams for the future are based on actual facts about the element.
**Use first person (“I”)

9. When I grow up example... .
When I grow up one day, I would like to be used in hydrogen fueled cars. People will see that using me in cars instead of gasoline will be much more kind to the environment.
Currently, I live in the ocean attached to another hydrogen atom and an oxygen atom. I have been stuck with these two guys for far too long and am ready to try something new. You try being stuck to the same atoms for a million years, you’d be bored too.
In order for me to be in the right form to be used in cars, I will have to be taken from the ocean and heated in order to be separated from the oxygen atom. Then I can be used to help power cars. It’s a dream but I know it can happen one day.

10. Part 2: CREATIVE Section Story, Poem, or Song
Create a story, poem or song about your element’s life.
It must include chemical (e.g. reactivity) and physical (e.g. soft, can be cut, shiny) characteristics (include 5 total)
It must contain at least 5-8 sentences (for the story) or 5- 8 lines (for the poem or song).

11. Story Example
For a baby, I’m actually really old. I’ve been around almost since the Big Bang. I am the simplest element, only made of one proton. You will mostly find baby elements like me combined with other elements because I hate being alone. I’m very reactive. I love to share my single electron but I’ll also borrow yours if you’re willing to share too. I’m a friendly element, what can I say.
I am colorless and odorless. I can’t even really be found in the air because I am so light that I eventually disappear into space.
I am a pretty useful element though. I am actually used in making fertilizers, plastics, and rocket fuel. Most importantly, I make up the water molecule which is the reason why there is life on this earth.

13. Picture of your baby element
Create or cut-out a picture of a baby and add a body
The baby needs to have a drawing of your element’s Bohr structure on the front of their shirt
Be sure to label your element and list its protons, neutrons & electrons in the correct amounts.
Include a drawing of the element’s Lewis Dot Structure somewhere else on the T-shirt (such as the sleeve)

15. Assembly Instructions
You will be assembling your baby book from two pieces of letter paper folded in half hamburger-style, tucked inside a folded piece of construction paper, and stapled.

16. Printing Your Project at Home
If you are planning to print your project at home (this is NOT a requirement, but some people prefer it), you need to format your document as follows:
Document Size = 8.5 x 11 inches (letter paper)
Orientation = Landscape
This information is in the “Page Setup” section under the “File” menu.
You also need to arrange your information as shown below. All page numbers refer to the BABY BOOK (not your document) – see slide 15 of this presentation.

17. Baby book must-haves and reminders:
Cover that includes the name of your element, a picture of the element (in everyday use), and your name and period
Birth certificate can be included as a page(s) in your baby book or can be on separate paper. If separate, make a pocket to hold the birth certificate.

18. Presentation
Oral Presentation: Teach the class about your element by sharing the information from your booklet. Make sure to also include the data from your Fact sheet. Don’t forget to sing your song and recite your story or poem as part of your presentation. Be informative and creative. Have Fun!
