1 Plan your week MonTuesWedThursFri CWDebate 1)Vocab 2)How to choose a topic Evaluating an argument based on audience 1) Vocab Due 2) Credibility of sources HW1)Topic Proposal 2)Vocab ResearchResearch and plan your essay (outline of body paragraphs) Today you’ll need: journal, writing utensil, argument paragraph, and evidence collected.

2 Debate Prep  Work with your partner and compare your written paragraphs. Go through and make sure there’s not repetitive evidence between the two paragraphs: each of you will be reading your paragraphs as your opening argument.  Have your evidence organized, and discuss how you will be handling the counterclaims and rebuttals.

3 Debate  Each side will have approximately 2-3 minutes for their opening argument (reading of paragraphs). As the other side reads their argument, you should be taking notes on what you’d like to refute when it comes to the rebuttal time.  After each side has presented, there will be a 4 minute counter and rebuttal time. During this time, you will address specific things mentioned in their argument, and refuting it with evidence collected. If you have evidence to refute their refutation, you will then counter what they said.  At the end, each side will have 1 minute for a closing argument.

4 Audience:  Your job is to take notes on the debate. Keep track of claims and evidence, as well as what evidence was negated through the use of counterclaims and evidence. At the end, write out a claim about which side “won” based on the strength of their evidence and rebuttals.
