2 Stockport Key Centre Analysis 2 The presentation has been designed so that it can be used independently of GMTU Report 947 for those who want an overview of the traffic movements around Stockport but do not wish to see the detailed tabulations GMTU Reports 947 & 947P are part of a series of reports presenting the data from the 2002 GMATS surveys GMATS Surveys 2002 Report 947P - Stockport Key Centre

3 Stockport Key Centre Analysis 3 Travellers leaving Stockport Key Centre by car & bus were asked about their journeys as they crossed a cordon around the centre Rail passengers boarding at Stockport station were also interviewed This presentation gives an overview of the findings from those surveys It considers first people who had visited the Centre, then those travelling through GMATS Surveys 2002 Stockport Key Centre

11 Stockport Key Centre Analysis 11 For most activities, car trips were only slightly longer on average than bus trips Bus trips averaged around 5km for all activities On average car trips were significantly longer for workers (9km) and business visits (14km) Visitors to the Key Centre How far did they travel? 16 Stockport Key Centre Analysis 16 81% of commercial vehicles leaving the Key Centre were Light Goods vehicles (LGVs) 53% of LGVs had journeys which finished within Stockport Only 4% of commercial vehicles leaving the Key Centre were HGVs, but 78% of these journeys finished outside Greater Manchester Commercial Vehicles leaving the Key Centre Where are they going?

18 Stockport Key Centre Analysis 18 The average distance for all goods vehicles was 14 km HGVs travelled 80 km on average compared to 11 km for LGVs and 7 km for MGVs Commercial Vehicles How far did they travel?

19 Stockport Key Centre Analysis 19 68% of all trips leaving the Key Centre were going home The next main activities were going shopping 9% and business visits 7% Visitors to the Key Centre What did they do at their destination?

20 Stockport Key Centre Analysis 20 67% of trips finished in Stockport. This did not vary much for different destination activities 21% of people going home lived in the rest of Greater Manchester and 12% outside Visitors to the Key Centre Where did they go/for what purpose?

21 Stockport Key Centre Analysis 21 All the previous slides have referred to trips starting in the Key centre. These next slides look at all trips crossing the survey cordon In the case of bus trips, all trips crossing the survey cordon are included In the case of vehicle trips, any through trips which are entirely motorway based are not included In the case of rail, only those trips which either start at Stockport Station or require an interchange at Stockport Station are included i.e. passengers on trains such as the London to Manchester route were not surveyed unless they changed trains or started at Stockport All trips passing through the survey cordon

22 Stockport Key Centre Analysis 22 83% of all trips crossing the cordon were made by car, 15% by bus and 2% by rail 69% of both car and bus trips finished within Stockport 62% of rail trips finished outside Greater Manchester All trips passing through the survey cordon How and where were they travelling?

23 Stockport Key Centre Analysis 23 34% of all trips were either ‘Home to Work’ or ‘Work to Home’ trips ‘Home to Shopping’ and ‘Shopping to Home’ accounted for another 15% of trips 34% of ‘Employers Business to Home’ and 29% ‘Home to Employers Business’ ended outside Greater Manchester All trips passing through the survey cordon What was their purpose?

24 Stockport Key Centre Analysis 24 The average distance travelled for cars was 14 Km, for buses 7 Km and for Rail 77 Km The longest distances for all modes were ‘Home to employers business’ (64 Km) and ‘Employers business to home’ (35 Km) ‘Home to work’ trips were 13 Km by car, 8 Km by bus and 27 Km by rail. The return directions were similar All trips passing through the survey cordon How far were they travelling?

25 Stockport Key Centre Analysis 25 94% of people walked from the alighting bus stop 5% caught another bus This is similar for all journey purposes with the exception of ‘Home to employers business’ (92% walk, 7% picked up in a car) Bus trips passing through the survey cordon How did people get to their destination from the bus?

26 Stockport Key Centre Analysis 26 On average there were 13 people per bus crossing the cordon between 0700 and 1900 This varied from an average occupancy of 11 during the morning peak (07:00 to 09:30) and during the inter- peak (09:30 to 15:30) to 19 in the evening peak (15:30 to 18:30) Bus trips passing through the survey cordon What was their average occupancy?

28 Stockport Key Centre Analysis 28 On average each car had 1.38 occupants Occupancy was lowest in the morning peak with an average occupancy of only 1.26 81% of cars had no passengers in the morning peak Car trips passing through the survey cordon What was their average occupancy?

29 Stockport Key Centre Analysis 29 59% of all goods vehicle journeys through the cordon finish in Stockport For both LGVs and MGVs 63% finish their journey in Stockport 56% of lorries with 4 or more axles finish their journeys outside Greater Manchester Commercial Vehicles passing through the survey cordon Where are they going?
