Mr.Dunnum Physical Science Physical and Chemical Properties

Physical Properties A physical property is any characteristic of matter that can be observed without changing the identity of the material.

Common Physical Properties You probably are familiar with some physical properties, such as color, shape, smell, and taste. You might not be as familiar with others, such as, mass, volume, and density.

More Common Physical Properties Mass- is the amount of matter in an object. A golf ball has more mass than a table-tennis ball. Volume-i s the amount of space that matter takes up. A swimming pool holds a larger volume of water than a paper cup does. Density- is the amount of mass in a given volume. A gold ball is more dense than a table- tennis ball.

Acids and Bases The strength of an acid or base can be determined by finding the pH of the sample. The pH scale has a range of 0 to 14.

Quick Review Define physical properties. The ph scale runs from ___ to____ What are the three common physical properties?

Acids and Bases Acids have a pH below 7 Sharp smell, Sour taste Bases have a pH above 7. Slippery and Bitter 7.

Acids and Bases A sample with a pH of exactly 7 is neutral— neither acidic nor basic.

Chemical Property A chemical property is a characteristic of matter that allows it to change to a different type of matter.

Two Types of Chemical Properties Flammability- the ability to burn Reactivity- is how easily one thing reacts with something else.
