CCSS Road Map: 2012-2013 The goal of implementing the Common Core State Standards is to ensure that instruction in our schools is changing dramatically. To accomplish this, the Common Core instructional shifts need to be visible and observable in all classrooms. DRAFT WORK IN PROGRESS

Does the district have capacity to develop its own curricular materials for all standards & grades? Create a job with full-time responsibility for engaging educators to develop curricular supports that include model units, lesson plans and sample assessment tasks with guidance on how to teach, develop and adapt them for every strand in every grade and for ELLs, SWD Provide evidence that the curricular materials reflect the shifts & Tri-State Rubric Yes No Decide if the district will adopt or adapt the state curricular materials or purchase new materials If adopting the state curricular materials, clearly communicate to all educators what the materials are, how they will assist educators, the roll-out timeline and their alignment to CCSS and state assessments If adapting the materials, consider who in the district has the content expertise to ensure quality remains high while adapting the materials to community needs If purchasing new materials, seek vendors who can provide evidence that their materials reflect the shifts, meet the Publisher’s Criteria and the Tri-State Rubric Step 1: Decide whether to adopt the state-developed curricular materials DRAFT WORK IN PROGRESS

Step 1: Decide whether to adopt the state-developed curricular materials If YES…what does the district need to do next? 4 Step 2: Determine your leadership team for CCSS Do you have a point person responsible for CCSS implementation? Identify someone who can meet the following expectations: Deeply understand the shifts Observe the shifts in practice Work collaboratively with HR staff/evaluation staff/PD staff to plan and implement curricular materials and professional development for all educators Collaborate with your NT/NTE to develop a 2012-2013 CCSS implementation plan Convene HR/evaluation/ curriculum staff to identify points of alignment with APPR and DDI implementation Track and adjust implementation plan Yes No DRAFT WORK IN PROGRESS

Communicate how you plan to effectively use the Ambassadors Engage the Ambassadors in planning and delivering professional development to educators around the instructional shifts and the curricular materials Enlist Ambassadors in adapting state curricular materials or analyzing alignment with the Publisher’s Criteria and Tri-State Rubric Ask Ambassadors to talk about CCSS with colleagues, parents & the public Step 3: Decide how to identify and deploy CCSS champions Does the district have a Teacher and/or Principal Ambassador? Identify your champions Can you nominate excellent teachers and principals to become Ambassadors? With which other districts that have ambassadors could you work? Which teacher/principal champions for CCSS in your schools could be tapped to support CCSS implementation? No Yes DRAFT WORK IN PROGRESS

Create a PD plan that includes supports that : Are content-rich and CCSS-driven Highlights adult-to-adult conversations and learning around grade-level content Emphasizes how to implement the instructional shifts with all students using rigorous materials Focuses on structures, scopes and sequences necessary to do the work each day Provides opportunity for collaboration and peer support Set realistic goals: When will the district reach 75% of educators? 85% of educators? 100% of educators? Step 4: Determine your plan for ensuring that all your educators deeply understand the CCSS instructional shifts Does the district have a high- quality PD plan that will reach every educator? Determine which mechanisms (training participant surveys, focus groups, state surveys, interim assessment results, etc.) you will use to track PD quality and fidelity of changes in instruction Collaborate with your NT/NTEs and other district colleagues to adjust plan based on the data and to reach 100% of educators Determine which mechanisms (training participant surveys, focus groups, state surveys, interim assessment results, etc.) you will use to track PD quality and fidelity of changes in instruction Collaborate with your NT/NTEs and other district colleagues to adjust plan based on the data and to reach 100% of educators Yes No DRAFT WORK IN PROGRESS

In collaboration with your colleagues : Hold teachers and principals accountable for shifts in the classroom Identify effective ways to embed CCSS in the “learning content” and “evidence” SLO elements Identify within the teacher and principal observation rubrics where to locate evidence of the shifts in practice Ensure observer training and calibration to the inter-rater reliability standard includes understanding the CCSS shifts Ensure that principal coaches and supervisors are co-observing classes and discussing the fidelity of CCSS shifts in instruction in classrooms Provide PD that addresses CCSS, APPR and DDI coherently and that prioritizes instruction based on the CCSS shifts Step 5: Integrate CCSS with APPR and DDI Have you identified the essential areas of intersection among CCSS, APPR and DDI? Convene your colleagues working on APPR and DDI to coordinate and integrate implementation plans Align district resources to your implementation plans Yes No DRAFT WORK IN PROGRESS

Step 5: Integrate CCSS with APPR and DDI If YES…what does the district need to do next? Have you identified the essential areas of intersection among CCSS, APPR and DDI? 12 District Plan Template What needs to be done? Who is best suited to do it? By when should it happen? Current Status: Red, Yellow, Green DRAFT WORK IN PROGRESS
