2 What is the U3A? The U3A is a learning organisation made up of independent groups … …whose members share educational, creative and leisure activities.

3 Caterham & District U3A We have over 100 members from a widespread area around Caterham. Our main activities centre on the Subject Groups.

5 Art The two Art groups meet fortnightly in Caterham. Here is the one at St. Mary’s Hall …

6 Art … and getting expert guidance from the tutor...

7 … and here is some work they have produced recently.

8 Bridge There are two groups for experienced players who enjoy a friendly rubber.

9 Computing... and all the many interesting things they can do with it. Warlingham, weekly on Thursday a.m. Group members discover what happens behind the scenes when they use a computer...

10 Digital Photography & Multimedia... take and edit photos, make videos, add music, and try to get their heads around the principles of digital data! Members of the computer group sometimes bring their cameras to compare notes...

11 Current Affairs & Philosophy … and who wish to clarify their ideas about the strange ways of the world by looking at them in a philosophical context. Fortnightly, Fridays in Caterham A group for members who enjoy a good discussion...

12 Exercise A bit of fun and a gentle workout. Fortnightly, Tuesday, in Warlingham.

13 French The most popular of all our activities! For members with some previous knowledge of the language. There are five separate groups, most meeting once a week. Caterham on the Hill or in the Valley.

14 Italian Conversation A new group for those with a grounding in the language who wish to become more confident in speaking it. Monday, weekly in Coulsdon.

15 Music Appreciation There are two groups, meeting fortnightly or weekly in Caterham. Although classical music is the keynote, a little jazz can sometimes be heard emanating from the loud speakers.

16 Psychology Members of this new group will explore the subject in a structured way... using a text book as a guide... fortnightly on Friday in Old Coulsdon.

17 Reading There are two groups, whose members read and discuss one book a month. Wednesday or Friday in Warlingham.

18 Reading Links with the County Library gave members an opportunity to attend a talk by Hilary Mantel, the 2009 Booker Prize Winner

19 Reading: some forthcoming attractions Open Secrets: short stories by Alice Munro Deaf Sentence by David Lodge Shakespeare on Silver Street by Charles Nichol Loitering with Intent by Muriel Spark Carol Ann Duffy, the poet laureate, will be discussed at a joint session of the two reading groups in July.

20 Social Scrabble Members of our newest group play this challenging mind game. They're friendly but keen! Fortnightly on ??????.

21 Walking Come rain, hail or snow, group members don their walking boots every other Tuesday for a gentle stroll through the local countryside...

22 Walking … followed by a pub lunch!

23 More walking Here they are on a cold January morning...

24 More walking … but soon the spring will arrive...

25 More walking … and sometimes it even gets hot!

26 Social Events Popular annual attractions are the Strawberry Cream Tea …

27 … and the Christmas Lunch! Good food and good company at the Surrey National Golf Club

28 Talks and Visits We were fortunate enough to be given a talk by the curator of Down House, home of Charles Darwin, which we followed up by a visit to the house itself.

29 Visits to other interesting places... … Titsey Place, Leonardslee Gardens, Quebec House and Squerryes Court

30 Come and Join Us! Anyone not in full-time work or education may join the U3A. Learn something new, exercise your creativity, get out more, meet new friends. Become a member (only £10 annually) and put a smile on your face.
