Upanayana - Thread Ceremony - was a tool by which the one could preserve hold over the other clans .
The Upanayana ceremony like any other religious ceremony could be performed only, by the Brahmins. After undergoing Upanayana, the Kshatriyas had to pledge to be protectors of Brahmins < recognize the higher status of the Brahmins in the caste hierarchy.
In doing this, we as Brahmins had the support of the emotional hold had over society as a whole by means which we could differentiate between warriors baptised as Kshatriyas and the unbaptised 'degraded' Kshatriyas.
