FORSCOM G-3/5/7 Discussion Topics The Old way The New Way –Hardware –Imagery Aerial Satellite –Software ESRI ® ERDAS ® –Techniques

FORSCOM G-3/5/7 The Old Way of Inventory & Monitoring Stubby pencil on paper or cards Acreage determined by counting squares on graph paper –Plannimeter was a big upgrade! –At least a 75% reduction in time to determine acreage Field maps drawn while bent over light table with plats or photos –Had to have stereo pairs for 3-D viewing –Also required a stereoscope…

FORSCOM G-3/5/7 Mapping done using hand compass and pacing Measurements done by tape and clinometer Calculations done by hand –IBM XT computers and early spreadsheets automated calculations –Much faster and more accurate The Old Way of Inventory & Monitoring

FORSCOM G-3/5/7 That was back then…. This is 2005….

FORSCOM G-3/5/7 We have field data recorders linked with a GPS that display imagery using ESRI ® software while in the field. Technology for Ecosystem Management

FORSCOM G-3/5/7 Technology for Ecosystem Management We have laser instruments to calculate and record tree height, diameter, distance, and basal area. We have remote weather stations that support prescribed burn planning and execution with real time data.
