This video clip shows a news story on an abortion clinic that was bombed on January 29, 1998. In the 1980's, extremist groups gained momentum; however, the authorities did not think of them as any special threat, they were merely treated as common criminals.

Benjamin Nathaniel Smith was a white supremacist that began targeting African Americans, Asians, and Jews in Illinois and Indiana. He killed two people and wounded nine others before taking his life.

Eric Robert Rudolph is said to be part of the racist Christian Identity Church. This church believes that only Caucasian people have soles. Eric Robert Rudolph bombed abortion clinics, a gay night club, and the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. He was arrested and has a life sentence with no ability for parole.

The approach of the new millennium created a new group of extremists called Survivalists. Those were the people that believed the world could end in the year 2000. Although survivalists are still present, when the turn of the millennium happened without incident, this group faded into the shadows.

This act was enacted in 2001 in response to 9-11. The USA Patriot Act dramatically reduced restrictions on law enforcement agencies' ability to search telephone, e-mail communications, medical, financial, and other records. (This means the government can track anyone and listen in on anyone’s phone calls.) This has a good and bad side to it, and some people believe that it has taken away from our rights.
