1. Coastal Inquiries: Canada/ EEC The proposal, entitled 'Coastal Inquiries: Social, Environmental, and Ethical Values of Sustainable Coastal Zone Development’ aims to stimulate student and faculty/staff exchange in the areas of economic, health, ecological, social, political, ethical, and aesthetic domains.

2. Consortium The consortium includes three Canadian (Memorial U. of Newfoundland, U. of Ottawa, U. of Victoria) and three European universities (Katholiek U. Nijmegen, U. College Dublin, U. Roskilde, Copenhagen).

3. Interdisciplinary Approach The challenge of a interdisciplinary approach promises to address problems that are ordinarily passed over due to narrow disciplinary boundaries. This year the intensive course will take in Dublin under the auspices of University College Dublin. Co leaders are: N. Moore and A. Buttimer

4. Anne Buttimer: UCD Buttimer has done much previous collaborative, interdisciplinary work, including the EU network for sustainable development. Moore has interest in the redevelopment of brownfield sites and has worked on the docklands in Dublin.

5. What will students learn? Students will be introduced to new methods of inquiry and stimulated to reflect upon the basis and limits of their disciplinary training. Students from local situations with specific disciplinary competences will be immersed in global forms of discourse on global issues of social and natural change.

6. Cross-Atlantic travel and study – in foreign cultural and disciplinary milieus will be supplemented by pre_exchange archival research (assisted by virtual instruction, coordinated by prior communication between faculty/staff at sending and receiving sites). – Student achievement will be measured in terms of development of techniques and methods, advancement of knowledge, and the drafting of policy applications

7. Application Procedures As part of the application for an exchange fellowship, a student shall prepare a proposal for involvement in the overall programme that is defined on the official web site of the project. 8. B. Archival Research Upon receipt of an exchange fellowship, a student will prepare through archival research on the Coastal Inquiries website (in cases of intensive courses, this may include taking virtual modules of the course). 9. C. Funding Exchange will normally be funded for a period of four months including air fare. The rate for the four months has not as yet been established but we will do our best to provide you with accommodations that are within the budget allocated to you for living expenses.

10. F. End Product Case study research will culminate in a major essay for appropriate undergraduate or graduate credit; essays will be evaluated by a board composed of two or more directors and may be published in our electronic journal.

11. G. Who can participate Student exchanges are directed primarily toward graduate students, though senior undergraduate students may also be considered.

12. Case studies to focus the curriculum and research: A. Possible themes (from earlier discussion) include: peat bogs/wetlands; fisheries; dockyards/brownfield sites; new nature; transport and communication.

13. B. Comparative Dimension Each case study shall have a comparative dimension, bringing together at least one European university and one Canadian university as leaders and matching at least one Canadian geographic area of focus with at least one cognate European area.

14. Important Dates applications must be submitted to me before Feb 7, 2002 for the course that begins May 15. –application requires a written proposal on what you plan to develop in the context of the overall intensive course themes – the nature of the cross-disciplinary approach you plan to employ coordination with the International Cooperation Office of the University of Ottawa at 558 King Edward

15. C. Cross Disciplinary Each case study will be approached in an inter- or cross-disciplinary way and will require the collaboration of geographers and philosophers (at minimum).

16. D. Archival of Case Study Materials The Coastal Inquiries web-site will serve as an archive for developing files on each case study and students should be encouraged to visit such archives in preparing their work.
