7 By the end of kindergarten, students are expected to: Read independently on a level 4 or above Read and write all sight words (word wall words) Form all uppercase and lowercase letters correctly Identify all letters and sounds Write using dominant sounds in words Using correct spacing, capitalization, and punctuation Identify syllables Recognize and generate rhyming words Demonstrate print awareness Listen attentively and follow directions

9 Reader’s Workshop Beginning of year: No expectation End of year: Level 4+ **See samples on desk Word wall words (sight words) Your students will start on the high frequency list this week. New site words fro each week will be included in the monthly homework packets and students are responsible for being able to read and write these words by the end of the year. Making a ring of the sight words with index cards is a great way to practice these at home.

10 Math Expectations By the end of kindergarten, students are expected to: Count objects to 20 Identify and write numbers 1-20 (in random order) Count by ones to 100 Identify half and whole Model addition and subtraction Identify and describe properties of shapes Read a calendar Construct and answer questions about a graph

11 Science Expectations By the end of kindergarten, students are expected to: Make observations and gather information Conduct investigations and communicate findings

12 Social Studies Expectations By the end of kindergarten, students are expected to: Identify similarities and differences in people Identify the U.S. and Texas flags and recite pledges Learn and apply rules Identify basic human needs Identify/ explain jobs Understand customs of holiday/ patriotic celebrations Identify contributions of historical figures Explain how technology has changed the way we live Identify physical geographic & human characteristics of a place

13 Safety First, Fashion Second! Wear athletic type shoes to P.E.! Flip –flops, platform shoes, heels, Croc type shoes or slip-on style shoes are not safe for your children during PE and recess time. Help your child learn to tie shoes. It’s safer! Wear shorts underneath dresses and skirts.

14 Library Students visit the library twice a week with their classes. On the first visit they will: Listen to a story or portion of a book Learn or research a library skill Hear about various authors and their books On the second visit: Have an opportunity to check out books Library Checkout: Friday

15 Important Information Folders- please make sure you are checking/signing you child’s folder DAILY Class parties- we will have three parties (Winter/Valentine’s/ EOY) this year. More information will be sent home as time nears. Newsletter-newsletters will be sent on a weekly basis through email/paper. Home Packet-A monthly review packet will be sent home the 1 st week of each month and is due at the end of each week. Please refer to our websites if you lose your packet or need further instruction. Please keep in your child’s folder. Folders will be checked on Mondays. Reading Log- Your child is expected to read at least 20 minutes each night. Reading logs are due at the end of each six weeks. Snacks- We have snack around 9am, we have a community snack. When it gets low we will send out an email to the parents. Field Trips- More info to come at a later date

16 ~Volunteers~ Volunteers are ALWAYS welcome at Schluter Elementary. You may volunteer services, time, or supplies. You may volunteer here at school or in the comfort of your own home. Daily opportunities for Library, Art, or Cafeteria All volunteers must be approved by NISD (background check- located on homepage of Schluter website) PTA contact- schluterpta@gmail.comschluterpta@gmail.com

17 AS A PARENT OF Schluter ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, PLEASE HELP BY… Making sure your child is rested, on time, and prepared for school each day. Knowing how your child is doing in school by communicating with teachers by folder, phone, or e-mail. Monitoring your child’s homework and make sure study time is in a quiet place. Limiting TV viewing and read together daily with your child. Being an active participant in your child’s education.

18 Conferences We will have parent/teacher conferences with all Spur families coming up in October. Please look for an email in the near future requesting a registration at Signupgenius.com. As needed or requested throughout the year.
