2 The Professional Engineer 4 sessions (Tuesday and Thursdays am/pm) Tuesday morning 9:15 am – visits (be PROMPT) Tuesday afternoon 14:15 - Dr Sam Burgess Thursday morning 9:15 – Mr Ian McCrum Thursday afternoon 14:15 – PDP Professor John Anderson. Some visits will be all day Tuesday… Week 3 and 4 differ slightly

3 Week 1, Tuesday 9:15 Induction – Ian McCrum 11:15 Library induction 13C37 (ground floor of library) 11:40 IT induction 13C37 14:15 Back in baseroom 6C37 for Dr Sam Burgess – “What is an engineer” – “How to give presentations” 16:30 – assignment handed out – Prepare an oral presentation (in teams) (to be given Tuesday of week 2)

4 9:15 – 13:05 Ian McCrum: “Effective communicating” The “paper plane exercise” Following specifications Making engineering prototypes Devising how to measure “goodness” Experimenting – measure performance Modifiying Concluding Writing up Handing in report – for assessment Week 1, Thursday

5 14:15 Professor Anderson (and helpers) The engineering profession – starting a business The engineer – Personal Development Planning The University PDSystem – a computerised way of storing your PDP details Week 1, Thursday

6 Week 2 Tuesday – visit to engineering works. Be in the baseroom at 9:15 sharp, or early!!! Coach will not wait Visits are important for two reasons –An assessed exercise will be given –The case studies in weeks 5 to 16 are based on the visits Tuesday afternoon, Dr Burgess will assess your team’s presentations

7 Week 2 Thursday – 9:15 am Guest lecture Followed by an assessed exercise (web based – should take 2 hours Thursday afternoon, PDSystem for PDP

8 Week 3 Tuesday visits (probably all day) Thursday – 9:15 am Guest lecture and assessed exercise Thursday 11:00 engineering exercise with Mr McCrum – design and drawing Thursday afternoon, PDSystem for PDP

9 Week 4 Tuesday visits in morning Tuesday afternoon – Dr Burgess on “Energy Consumption and the engineer” Thursday – 9:15 am Guest lecture and assessed exercise Thursday 11:00 Energy Consumption – exercise and assessment. Thursday afternoon, PDSystem for PDP

10 Assessments Where written or computer based. MUST hand in something to the school office 5D05. MUST use proper forms and get a signed receipt MUST keep the receipt MUST be before the deadline (not AT the deadline) If going to be late and you have a valid reason, download an EC1 form and submit to me – before the deadline! Along with written “proof” from a third party authority
