2 Today's State Standards Rights and Responsibilities of Citizens Students evaluate the scope and limits of rights and obligations as democratic citizens, the relationships among them, and how they are secured. GC.35 Analyze the meaning and importance of each of the rights guaranteed under the Bill of Rights and how each is secured (e.g., freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, petition, and privacy). (P) GC.39 Describe the reciprocity between rights and obligations, that is enjoying rights means fulfilling certain obligations and respecting the rights of others. (P) Primary Documents and Supporting Texts to Read: excerpts from the Constitution; the Bill of Rights

3 Our objectives Understand our rights as granted by the Bill of Rights. Understand our obligations as US citizens.

4 Our Goal Today Our country was founded to ensure individual rights against the power of government. The Bill of Rights was our nation's first attempt at documenting these rights. Know and understand these rights is our goal today.

12 Fifth Amendment No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."
