Lesson Starter In your own words, write down two ways that ethnic minorities are treated unequally in the legal system. You have 5 minutes to complete this task. Help each other!

What you will learn Some groups face inequalities with crime. Some groups face inequalities in housing.

Success Criteria Explain in what ways ethnic minorities face inequalities with crime and housing. Outline the problem of homelessness.

Crime and Justice Lawyers cost a lot of money in the USA- it is estimated that a third of death row inmates in Philadelphia would have received sentences of life imprisonment if they had not been black. Lawyers more likely to seek a death sentence when victim is white and are less likely to seek a death sentence when the victim is black.

Crime and Justice Races are not treated equally in the legal system. More black people are in jail than white people

Crime and Punishment Crime concentrated in urban areas- called Ghettos. Black people more likely to be arrested for murder. Victims of crime are also concentrated in the urban areas. Ethnic minorities who live in these ghettos or barrios are more likely to be victims of crime. Crimes occur within race and economic groups- poor black people more likely to be victims of crime.

Housing In the USA, many people live in urban areas. Some people live in the ‘ghetto’. However those who have more money may live in nice inner-city apartments. A lot of middle class people (black and white) live in the suburbs which tend to be safer places to live.

Task You will see images of different areas in the USA. On your show me board, decide if it is a feature of: Inner city ghetto Inner city apartments Middle class suburb

Streets patrolled regularly by police.

Homelessness In the USA, over half without a home were from an ethnic minority. Main reason-substance abuse. However this is being quickly overtaken by the fact many cannot afford to stay in their homes. Sub prime mortgages- many cannot afford the high mortgage payments.
