NUS and the NSS Victoria Passant, Student Feedback Assistant April 2010

Best practice with getting students engaged with the NSS Using NSS for change – Case studies Discussion Aims of this session…

Getting students involved… Use existing course rep mechanisms Name drop the NSS everywhere Creative campaigns Target specific groups of students Use a variety of mediums Go Out And Talk – G.O.A.T Tell students what the NSS has done in the past!

Case Study One: Anglia Ruskin… The Director of Student Affairs pledged to fund the campaign with £1500, and even received additional funding from the Dean of Health and Social Care – keen to see NHS-funded students participation increase. Used themed “Wish you were here” events/promotional materials Incentives of two £250 holiday vouchers 10,000 stickers were put on all boxed food at university outlets Used course reps and had course rep incentives Student-specific targeting

Using the NSS for change… Greater promotion of policies, practices and support available to students Creation of minimum standards or imposition of a minimum turnaround time for feedback Positive promotion of the role of students’ unions as assisting in the delivery of changes that are valued by students Increased or reformed contact hours or teaching time Evidence for quality assurance and enhancement processes Reforms to assessment practices such as anonymous marking Increased funding and investment for teaching spaces and key facilities Renewed focus on student engagement through investigation and investment into course rep and personal tutoring systems Celebrating good practice through Teaching and Personal Tutoring Awards Providing inspiration for institutional and union surveys and focus groups.

Case Study Two: Roehampton University… 1.NSS results demonstrated a need for a change to the student representation system. 2. Showed a lack of consistency across the board in terms of ways for students to give feedback on their courses. 3. Combined the NSS data with further surveys and research to gain students’ views. 4. Conducted one to one interviews. 5. Consulted existing programme reps 6. Results were turned into a proposal developed by the Union to overhaul the rep system.

NUS using the NSS for change…. Since 2005, NSS has always highlighted Feedback as an area of concern NUS began to work with Unions and Associations to campaign on this area and worked with them to identify what students could expect NUS formulated a set of principles to allow students to benchmark the efficacy of their feedback and launched a national feedback amnesty campaign. Students’ unions have used this framework to lobby for standardisation

How does your Student Association and Institution currently work together in regards to the NSS? What are your experiences of student engagement with the NSS at your institution?
