1. Chapter 5  Formation of the Gospels  Gospel means good news.  The Gospels are faith summaries.  The are not biographies or autobiographies

2.  Stage 1:  The Historical Jesus  6-4BCE to 27-30CE  Jesus lived, preached, died and rose from the dead.

3.  Stage 2:  The Oral Tradition:  30 CE – 70 CE  Since Jesus said he would come again, the followers of Jesus did not feel a need to write down the accounts of Jesus.

4.  The Resurrection was the first good news story to be preached.  The Apostles and early Christians preached about Jesus.

5.  Stage 3  The Written Gospels  70CE – 110 CE  Due to the fact that many of the eye- witnesses were dying or becoming old Christians decided to write down the events of Jesus’ life.

6. The Gospels  Mark’s Gospel:  Written around 70 CE  Audience: Christians being persecuted for their beliefs in Jesus Christ.  Question: Are we following the “right” religion since we are being persecuted for our faith?  Mark’s answer: Yes, Jesus also suffered. Being both human and God Jesus knows what we are going through. To be a Christian may indeed result in suffering for our faith.

7. Matthew’s Gospel Written 85 -95 CE Audience: Jewish Christians Question: It is ok to be Jewish and to believe in Jesus Christ? Answer: Yes. Jesus fulfills the Torah. Jesus is the Promised one of the Old Testament. Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus is a continuation of Judaism. Jesus is the New Moses.

8.  Matthew had both Mark’s Gospel and a source know as “Q”  “Q” is a source of sayings of Jesus that both Luke and Matthew drew upon.

9. Luke’s Gospel  90-100CE  Audience: Gentile Christians  Question: Did Jesus just come for the Jews?  Answer: No, Jesus came for everyone. Jesus is the Universal Savior.  Luke may have been Paul’s secretrary.

10. John’s Gospel  95 CE – 110 CE  Audience: Established Christian Community  This gospel comes to us straight from the oral tradtion, but it was the last to be wrtten about 70 years after Jesus’ death and resurrection.  Jesus is portrayed as the Word that has come to us from God and lived among us.  P. 88

11. Messages of Jesus  1. Repent and change your ways. ( John the Baptist. “Go and sin no more.”) 2.The kingdom of God is here and now. (Jesus compared the kingdom of God to banquets and meals.) 3.The kingdom of God will triumph no matter what. 12. Messages of Jesus 4.Love one Another Parable of the Good Samaritan. Parable of the Good Samaritan. Love: to seek and foster the Good of Others in the context of their concrete situation. To look for and nurture the good in another and to accept them as valuable and as they are.

13. Messages of Jesus  Love is a verb. Love requires action.  The good is the same good you would want for yourself.  Acceptance of the value and worth of the person is important.  Agape – Greek for love  the respect and justice we are to show to every person. “ I wish for your welfare, your good as another human being whether I like you or not.”  Jesus is asking that we wish well and do good to our fellow human beings.

16. Messages of Jesus  6. Salvation is taking place here and now.  Jesus is our Savior. He came to save us from sin. Jesus means Yahweh saves.  Jesus performed many miracles to show God’s power to conquer sin. God’s power to conquer sin. Jesus came to bring us back to God.

17. Messages of Jesus 7.Pray Always Pray All Ways Jesus told his to pray – communicate with God. Ask God for help when needed. 18. Messages of Jesus 8.Live Joyfully If we are truly people of the Good News we need to live joyfully. Jesus spent time with His friends. Jesus attended weddings and banquets.
