Process Planning is the Key to the design and Manufacturing of all Products.

DESIGNING AND BUILDING A PROJECT From Basic Scroll Work!

DESIGNING AND BUILDING A PROJECT  Maybe a BBQ!

DESIGNING AND BUILDING A PROJECT  Maybe it is an entire set of Hog Pens?  All Project REQUIRE project planning

DESIGNING AND BUILDING A PROJECT  Idea- What is your end Goal  Sketch- Draw it out!  Measurements- Always Need Measurements!  Material list- What is the end product Made of ??  Cutting, drilling, part preparation.  Layout- Drawing it out full size! Marking Cuts, holes to be drilled, ect…  Assembly- Putting it together!!

DESIGNING AND BUILDING A PROJECT  Parts List- What are the Parts to be made or Purchased?  How will it be assembled? Will it be welded, bolted, riveted, glued, or???  How will it be finished? (what will it look like) Painted, Powder-coated, bare-metal finish, oil rubbed, ect…

DESIGNING AND BUILDING A PROJECT  Where do I start?  What do I Know how to do?  Don’t fool yourself into a big project.  Be reasonable!  Know the Limitations

DESIGNING AND BUILDING A PROJECT  Resources for Projects  Pictures  Tools  Sketches  Idea exchange

DESIGNING AND BUILDING A PROJECT  What does this Project Cost??  Get Quotes for Materials  Get Quotes for Cost of Parts.  Cost of Consumables?  Sandpaper, paint, grinding stones,  Welding Wire, Welding Gas, electricity!!

DESIGNING AND BUILDING A PROJECT Tools What will you need for this project. What do you have Vs. What you Need?

DESIGNING AND BUILDING A PROJECT  Cutting the Material?  Band Saw  Cold Saw  Shear?  Do you need to?  Drill Holes  Pre-finish the material  (material Prep)

DESIGNING AND BUILDING A PROJECT  How will you assemble this Project?  Weld It  Bolt it.  Rivet it.  Glue  Duct Tape

DESIGNING AND BUILDING A PROJECT What about Parts? Nuts & Bolts Sand Paper Grinding disc Paint/coatings Hardware

DESIGNING AND BUILDING A PROJECT  Assembly?  How will this fit Together?  Welding?  Which process?  Using Nuts & Bolts?  What About Rivets?  Well what kind of Rivets  What about all 3 ways?

DESIGNING AND BUILDING A PROJECT  First create an idea book  Then take pictures of things you like  Or go on the website to get ideas  Once you have the idea go and start with Step #1

STEP #1: DRAWINGS  Make a 3 view drawing and add the measurements to it  Have it checked  Make a three view drawing complete with measurements  Have it checked

STEP #2:MAKE A MATERIAL LIST  Using your sketch as a guide you will need to determine what materials you will need for your project.  List those small needs or Ideas?

Step #3: Tools and Equipment  What are the tools that Are needed  What equipment do you need to complete this project.

Step#4: Process steps  Develop a set of steps that must be followed to complete the project.  What Must be done (in order?)  Be detailed. Think through what needs to be done  Don’t assume. Not every one knows how everything is performed.  Details, Details, Details.

STEP #5: LAYOUT AND CUTTING  Obtain the Raw materials  Cut them to correct sizes  Layout and identify the pieces  Assemble them (pre-fit)  Have it checked  Disassemble  Do finish work (sanding, grinding, also called Material Prep)

Step #6: Pre-Assembly  Pre-Assemble the Parts To make sure they Fit Correctly  Make Adjustments.

STEP #7: FINISHING  Assemble the Project  How is the Project Finished  Grinding  Buffing  Painting  Sanding  Polishing

DESIGNING AND BUILDING A PROJECT  #1- Drawings or Sketch  #2 - Material List/Parts List.  #3 - Process Steps  #4 - Cut the parts (material prep)  - Layout the Parts  #6 - Assemble  #7 - Finish

ASSIGNMENT  We Will Start with #1 (10 points  Draw the project: Be as detailed as you can.  Make a Materials List. (10 points)  List all of the parts or componants  Make a Part List. (10 points)  Equipment/tool list (10 points  Process Steps (60 points)  Develop Each Task that a technician Must perform to complete the Project. Put them in sequential order.

Assignment  To Manufacture:  A Sandwich! Teams of 2. Random drawing to determine groups

Project Requirements Parts:  2 Slices of Bread (required)  2 Slices of Turkey or Ham (required)  Must use One Condiment  Mustard, Mayonnaise, ect..

Project Requirements:  Must also Include One of the Following-  Cheese  Lettuce  Tomato

Project Requirments  The Group will be Graded on How well their project is Put together.  If during the assembly there is a process skipped the project is stopped.  If the group is successful Both will be able to Enjoy.

Project Requirements  Team Work Is Key  Think through the entire Project  Don’t assume.  What are the Detailes?  Step By Step Process

Project requirements  This Will be “Manufactured” During Class  Plates are required to be used  Napkins will be available  Personal Protective Equipment Must Be used  Food Prep Gloves

Project Requirements  Must Include Cleanup Directions.  And Most Important- Don’t forget to include eating the sandwich and duplication of the project if the group is successful.

The end
