3 Civil Rights Amendments KEY QUESTIONKEY QUESTION Which groups of people were left out of the original Constitution? How did the Civil Rights Amendments fix these injustices? Give three examples.

4 Civil & Voting Rights CIVIL RIGHTS – (Rights guaranteed to all Americans).

5 Civil Rights Amendments 13th Amendment - RATIFIED (approved) in 1865, outlawed slavery in the United States.

6 Civil Rights Amendments 14 th Amendment (1868) - granted full citizenship to African-Americans. This did not include Native- Americans because at the time they could not become citizens.

7 Civil Rights Amendments 2nd clause - no state can take away the rights of a U.S. citizen. 14th Amendment

8 Voting Rights Amendments SUFFRAGE - (Fighting for the right to vote).

9 Voting Rights Amendments 15 TH Amendment (1870) - guaranteed that any man, black or white, shall be allowed to vote.

10 Voting Rights Amendments THEY LOOK NUN-TOO HAPPY!!!

11 Voting Rights Amendments 17 th Amendment (1913) - State LEGISLATORS (elected representatives who make laws) elected U.S. Senators.

12 Voters choose their two U.S. Senators.

13 Voting Rights Amendments 19 th Amendment (1920) - women may vote regardless of the state that they live in. Prior to this amendment, several states did allow women the right to vote.

14 Civil Rights Amendments 23 rd Amendment (1961) - People in Washington DC can vote in national elections.

15 Civil Rights Amendments 24 th Amendment - (1964) Forbade the use of any restriction to voting, other than proof of citizenship.

16 Civil Rights Amendments The 24 th Amendment is one of the things that Rev. Martin Luther King and thousands of others were fighting for.

17 Civil Rights Amendments 26 th Amendment (1971)- voting age lowered from 21 to 18.
