Thermal Energy Transfer Vocabulary Project MSSELL Week 6.4

energy (noun) – the ability to cause change or to do work; energy is a property of all matter en er gy W4D1

Energy cannot be made or destroyed, it just changes form. Law of Conservation of Energy W4D1

transformation (noun) – the act of changing trans for ma tion energy transformation energy transformation (noun) – energy changing to a different form

W4D1 A flashlight demonstrates energy transformation. chemical energy electrical energy light energy Then the electrical energy transforms to light energy. First the chemical energy transforms to electrical energy. The battery stores chemical energy.

thermal energy transfer (noun) – the movement, or transfer of heat energy thermal energy transfer W4D1-2 Thermal energy transfer has a pattern, a characteristic that is observed over and over again. Heat energy always moves, or transfers from the higher temperature to the lower temperature.

W3D1-2 If you hold an ice cube in your hand, heat energy moves from your hand to the ice and melts it. If you open a door on a cold winter day, heat energy moves from inside the warm house to the cold outdoors.

investigate (verb) – to explore and gather information in ves ti gate Today investigated thermal energy transfer using a heat transfer kit. W4D2

Heat energy transfers, or moves in three different ways: conduction convection radiation

conduction (noun) – the transfer, or movement of heat between objects that touch each other con duc tion Conduction causes the handle of a spoon placed in a cup of hot coffee to warm up. Heat energy moves from the hot coffee to the cooler spoon. W4D2

convection (noun) – transfer, or movement of heat in a fluid (liquid or gas) through currents con vec tion As water on the bottom of the pot heats up, the warm water rises and the cold water sinks. This movement of water is called a convection current. W4D2

radiation (noun) – the transfer, or movement of heat energy through space as waves ra di a tion The Sun heats Earth through the process of radiation. Heat energy moves from the hot Sun to the cooler Earth. W4D2
