3 WHY should educators use WIKI? Administrators and school district stakeholders feel that educators are going to have to step up the technology piece in schools---the use of technology should extend beyond the computer class.

4 Cont. WHY should educators use WIKI? We were introduced to Wikispaces in the past year, and as we started to create the first space for our students we realized how much learning, communicating, and collaborating could take place.

6 What the Research Says? Research by David Warlick..... a former educator and administrator, presently a consultant for The Landmark Project asks educators to consider : -----What do kids need to learn in today’s classrooms in order to be ready for an unpredictable future?---- Michael Cox, a chief economist for the Federal Reserve Bank, predicts that students will have at least five jobs after they graduate, four of which haven't even been invented yet.

8 Cont. What the Research says? The 3R's have changed to the 4E's when defining literacy in the 21 st Century.

9 The 4 E’s…. Reading = Exposing Knowledge (finding, decoding, evaluating, organizing information) Arithmetic= Employing information (basic math skills, computer-aided processing numbers, processing media)

10 Cont. The 4 E’s… Writing= Expressing ideas Compellingly (writing effectively and communicating with the use of multimedia) Ethics: Right and Wrong on the information highway (Information reliability, property, and infrastructure)

11 Creating a Wiki for What Uses? General categories---- Specific categories--- Manage school and classroom documents Collaborate with other educators Collaborate with an international classroom Design simple websites Create group projects Discuss and debate Involve parents and community Post classroom assignments Peer-reviewed projects Book clubs, essential question discussions, etc. Reading lists Online novels or e-books Writers’ corner Virtual art museum

12 WIKI Etiquette Agreement No cursing. No slang. No text typing. No name calling. Write in complete sentences. Use capitalization and punctuation. Spell correctly. Do not write in ALL CAPS. It is considered shouting. No altering of published works or editing the Wiki.
