4  During this time the Jewish people were under captivity by the Babylonians  King Cyrus of Persia issued a decree that would allow them to be freed and to return to their home land  When they came back they the cities were in bad conditions and required rebuilding, including the temple. 4

5  They started reconstructing the temple, but it eventually slowed down and people concentrated on their own homes, this is where Haggai comes in  Haggai encouraged them to build the temple through the use of 4 sermons 5

6 1. You have sown much, and bring in little; You eat, but do not have enough; You drink, but you are not filled with drink; You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; And he who earns wages, Earns wages to put into a bag with holes. 2. And the lord also said that the ground would not bear fruit nor shall the sky bear dew while my temple lies in ruins. 6

7 1. ‘Who is left among you who saw this temple [a] in its former glory? And how do you see it now? In comparison with it, is this not in your eyes as nothinga 2. And the lord also said that all is his and he will fill it with glory 7

8 1. “If one carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and with the edge he touches bread or stew, wine or oil, or any food, will it become holy?”’” Then the priests answered and said, “No.” 13 And Haggai said, “If one who is unclean because of a dead body touches any of these, will it be unclean?” So the priests answered and said, “It shall be unclean.” 2. And the lord also said that the people working on the temple must be free of sin to receive the blessing 8

9 1. ‘ I will shake heaven and earth. 22 I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms; I will destroy the strength of the Gentile kingdoms. I will overthrow the chariots And those who ride in them; The horses and their riders shall come down, Every one by the sword of his brother. 2. And the lord also said that the nation shall be the stronegst of all 9

10 1. The people of Israel returned to their home land after captivity to rebuild the temple 2. The did not have the motivation to build the temple 3. The Lord sent Haggai to deliver 4 messages to get people working again 10

11 1. “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:33) 11
