The Genocide By: Aspen McMillan

. That time of year was slowly rolling around. It was the end of June and the entire family was planning for Andy’s 10th birthday on July 1st. All of the toys could sense the excitement in the air and they were tense. Lotso, their leader, spent hours creating a plan for when the “New Ones” arrived. He was preparing to address the toys with his yearly speech.

The next day, after Andy went to camp and his parents left for work, Lotso rounded up the toys in the middle of Andy’s room and began. “We all knew this day was coming. We go through it every year and this year is no different. You must stay strong and mark your territory! WE are Andy’s favorite toys. We’ve been here longer and there’s no way we’re going to let these new toys come in and take over. Refuse to let Andy forget who you are!! NO NEW TOYS!!”

All the toys began to chant and cheer. They were ready to go to war. Every year after Andy’s birthday, his mom has an annual garage sale. The plan was to sneak as many new toys into the sale so that they would be taken away and the old toys would never be forgotten. It worked every year and they were on the look out for any new toys.

On the day of Andy’s birthday, the old toys watched and impatiently waited while he opened all of his presents. New race cars, action figures and video games surrounded the room. All of the old toys found themselves growing jealous quickly. When the family left to take Andy out to dinner, the old toys immediately took action.

Lotso stepped forward to greet the New Ones and tell them how it’s going to be. “Listen here all new toys, you have entered OUR territory and it is important for you to understand that we are Andy’s favorite toys and that will never change. Tonight, you will be separated according to genre and tomorrow you will be placed in boxes that are going out to the annual garage sale. Any toy that tries to resist or get away will face severe consequences and/or given to Andy’s dog Buster.

The toy soldiers began to order everyone around and started putting them into boxes. The shiny polish and fresh paint gave them away and allowed the soldiers to determine which toys were new and which were old. Tanks surrounded the entrance to Andy’s room and made sure that no toy got away. Every once in a while, the sound of a missile flew through the air and the plastic pieces of a toy shattered on the ground.

Once the mission was complete, the old toys assumed their positions as if nothing happened. When the family returned from dinner, Andy forgot all about his new toys and picked up his old ones. Buzz, Woody and Mr. Potato Head sat in the middle of the room excited to be played with once again. “Watch out Woody! The asteroid is falling! RUN!” Andy picked up Buzz and pretended to fly him through the air to save his friends. All the other toys watched from their shelves and knew that it was only another 12 months until Andy’s next birthday…
