What is it? Rabies is a rare but serious disease caused by a virus. The virus that carries rabies is Salvia. It is transmitted when an infected animal bites another animal. Rabies affects humans and other animals.

Symptoms First; weakness, discomfort, fever, or headache Second; Prickling or itching where bitten, confusion Third; hallucinations, insomnia, delirium Disease is ALWAYS fatal if not treated immediately Once symptoms are noticeable survival is rare

History Has been known since 2300 B.C. Once infected, if untreated survival is rare At one time Ontario Canada was know as the “rabies Capitol of North America” 201-300 A.D. is when treatment for rabies was discovered

Treatment Should fist be treated with standard cleansing procedures. Antibiotics and tetanus injections are usually given also

Current research Rabies is a rare disease for tame animals and pet There is no general group of people who can contract rabies Rabies is contracted when victim is bitten by a rabid animal Rabies is a virus that is transferred through animal saliva One of the oldest infections known to mankind Doctors are currently trying to make sure most animals have shots to prevent the disease from spreading

Current event A 22 year old man in the spring of 1990 was bitten by a bat in a tavern in Texas. He felt fine so didn’t go to the doctor. 6 weeks later he hurt his hand again fishing. He went to the doctor completely forgetting about the bat. He started to feel unusually weak. He then a week later began to hallucinate. His muscles were weak and throat was very sore, he couldn’t swallow so he refused to drink. He then fell into a coma and died from one of the most feared contagious diseases: rabies.

How its spreads Rabies is a rare but serious disease caused by a virus The virus that carries rabies is saliva It is usually transmitted by an animal bite In rare occasions the rabies virus can be transmitted in other ways Some scientists believe the virus can be inhaled Once it enters the body it travels to the nerves branching from the spinal cord and brain
