5. ORIGIN  The Theatre was the original playhouse for Lord Chamberlain’s Men  Dispute over land caused the house to be taken down  It was re-created by Shakespeare and his men as The Globe

6. STRUCTURE  Globe was a small theatre  Measured less than 30 meters across (96 ft)  Due to structure, it could hold between 2,000 & 3,000 people …The largest theatre in London TODAY seats 1,160

STRUCTURE  Closed, Octagonal Shape (8 sides)  Open courtyard where the stage stood  Tiered galleries around the open area accommodated the wealthier patrons who could afford seats  Lower classes--the "groundlings"--stood around the stage during the performance of a play.  The space under and behind the stage was used for special effects, storage, and costume changes.
