ORIGIN The Theatre was the original playhouse for Lord Chamberlain’s Men Dispute over land caused the house to be taken down It was re-created by Shakespeare and his men as The Globe

STRUCTURE Globe was a small theatre Measured less than 30 meters across (96 ft) Due to structure, it could hold between 2,000 & 3,000 people …The largest theatre in London TODAY seats 1,160

STRUCTURE Closed, Octagonal Shape (8 sides) Open courtyard where the stage stood Tiered galleries around the open area accommodated the wealthier patrons who could afford seats Lower classes--the "groundlings"--stood around the stage during the performance of a play. The space under and behind the stage was used for special effects, storage, and costume changes.
