Mechanical Design  1998Ph.D. (Experimental), Case Western Reserve University, USA  1998-1999Industrial Experience (Experimental), USA  2000-2008Faculty, Pakistan  2008-2009Post Doc, USA, Die Casting (Experimental)  2010QEC (Experimental Research) 2

Learning Methodology The Only Way to Learn Football is to 3 Play Football

Students Please Introduce Yourself  Please tell your name  Please tell where you are working:  Please tell how would you like to use this course material in your work place (may be by the end of this lecture) 4

Before the lecture we will start with a story  Die Cast Engine Blocks

Experiments All Engineers want improvement in their: Product Process Results Q: What combination of variables will lead to the best result?

Design of Experiments  To get the best results you have to  Choose the right variables for the experiment  Choose their values to test  Choose what to measure and how Good Experiments don’t happen They have to be carefully designed Thus the subject: Experimental Methods and Analysis

Outline  Self Introduction  Learning Methodology  Why Study Experimental Methods and Analysis  Student Introduction  Course Outline  Case Study  MiniTab

Contacts  Dr. Mohammad A. Irfan  Office Room No. B1-G114  Other Office Floor 5, Core 2, Main Building  Office Hours: Wed 11 am -1 pm  Email: mairfan@qec.edu.samairfan@qec.edu.sa 9

Why do we need to study Experimental Methods and analysis ? 10

Course Objectives  1. To provide the Masters student with hands on experience on design of experiments as practiced in the industry.  2. To learn the application of statistical techniques and concepts to maximize the amount and quality of information resulting from experiments.  3. To have exposure to commercial statistical software used in the industry

Schedule - I

Schedule - II

How will you use this course at your work place?  Please think about it  Think of an experiment  Think of the inputs and outputs This will become your mini project

Mini Project  Think of an experiment at your workplace  Think of the inputs and outputs

Design Of Experiments Process Uncontrollable Factors Questions : 1.Which factors affect the response (output) ? 2.Which factor has the most affect on response ? 3.Which combination of factors have the most desirable effect ? 4.What should be the value of factors to get a certain value of response? Measurable Output Controllable Factors

Mini Project - II  Objective: The objective of this project is to …….  Methodology: What will you do?  End Result: This is what you aim to achieve  Please write this on one page of paper and bring it next week

MiniTab: Please buy on your own

MiniTab Practice Sessions  Will start in a few weeks  We will tell you in advance  You will need to bring your laptops in class to practice

Case Study  An example of why do we need to study Experimental Methods and Analysis?  Industrial Example

Questions/Discussions
