3. Remember to PEE when you answer this Q… River landforms can affect people’s lives negatively like in Boscastle. In Boscastle (2004), over 60mm of rainfall occurred onto the floodplain next to the R. Valency. This combined with the steep slopes caused increased surface runoff. The social effects of this were not good. People lost their homes which lead to them being homeless or forced to move away. The consequence of this is Boscastle was like a ghost town. 4. Theme 2 – climate Read the following newspaper article about Bangladesh, which is an LEDC. QC. Explain why climate change is likely to have a greater impact on the lives of people who live in LEDCs, rather than people who live in MEDCs. Use information from this article and your own knowledge to illustrate your answer.[6] Climate change and Bangladesh : “Rising sea levels is one of the most important issues humans will have to grapple with in this century. The people who will be affected first live in places with low-lying deltas like Bangladesh. The increasing intensity of tropical storms and rising sea level are making it impossible for people to live in some parts of the country. Millions of people face the possibility of being among the first climate refugees. A one metre sea level rise would flood more than 15 per cent of Bangladesh, forcing 13 million people to leave their homes.”

5. Remember to PEE when you answer this Q… Climate change can have negative and positive impacts on people. This can be through low lying deltas in Bangladesh or tropical storms. 6. Theme 3 - Hazards QC) Explain how the impact of earthquakes on people’s lives may be reduced. Use one or more examples to illustrate your answer. (6)

7. Remember to PEE when you answer this Q… Technology can be used to reduce the impact on people in earthquakes. Sichuan earthquake (2008) had some deadly impacts – 69,000 people were reportedly killed. However, there were many things they could have done to manage the effects. Technology such as laser beams to detect plate movement is useful because it can give prediction times which allows people time to evacuate. P oint E vidence E xplanatio n

8. Theme 4 - population Qc) Explain why many Western European countries face an increasingly ageing population. Use one or more examples to illustrate your answer [6]

9. Remember to PEE when you answer this Q… P oint E vidence E xplanatio n The UK has an ageing population because of an improved standard of living. The UK’s population pyramid (draw one convex shape) shows more people are living for longer due to improved medical care. We also know this because of an increase in retirement homes and services for the elderly. Better medical care means better treatment for the elderly which leads to an increase in life expectancy.

10. Theme 5 - Globalisation QC) Explain why some people who live in newly industrialised countries such as India or China see globalisation as a threat. Use one or more examples to illustrate your answer[6]

11. Remember to PEE when you answer this Q… P oint E vidence E xplanatio n Globalisation can bring negatives for India for example their links with Coca Cola. Environmentally Coca Cola contaminated the drinking wells and left thousands of people without clean water. They used the water in their factories to make their products. This contamination of water lead to many workers becoming ill and unable to work. Long term the wells were beyond repair.

12. Theme 6 - development QC) Explain how NGOs can help LEDCs achieve one or more of the Millennium Development Goals. Use one or more examples to illustrate your answer[6]

13. Remember to PEE when you answer this Q… India used aid in the form of teachers, newly built schools, exercise books and pencils and also encouraged families to send their children, particularly girls to schools. By encouraging girls (and boys) to go to schools India was trying to meet it’s Asian MDG of raising literacy rates and empowering the role of women in society. P oint E vidence E xplanatio n Oxfam has helped India to improve their MDG of literacy through the use of developmental aid.
