FINAL YEAR PROJECT (FYP) ERT 423 SESSION 2010/2011 “INTRODUCTION” MISMISURAYA MEOR AHMAD mismisuraya@unimap.edu.my

CONTENTS 1) FYP INTRODUCTION 2) FYP AIM 3) TEACHING PLAN (COURSE OUTCOME) 4) GRADING SCHEME 5) LOG BOOK & FILE/FOLDER 6) RELATED FORM 7) PLAGIARISM

FYP INTRODUCTION  a subject that must be completed by final year students as a requirement to receive the bachelor of engineering degree.  2 semesters to work on a task that is related to a student’s field of interest.  students are expected to do their work independently most of the time, but their progress will be monitored closely by their supervisors.  students will have to document their work in a thesis which must be hard bounded and submitted to the school.

FYP AIM “The aim of the FYP is to give students opportunity to apply the knowledge that they have gained while studying in UNIMAP to solve practical engineering problems. By doing so, it is hoped that the students will gain knowledge and experience in solving problems systematically therefore when they graduate, they will be ready to work as reliable and productive engineers.”

TEACHING PLAN (COURSE OUTCOME) 1) Ability to design and conduct experiment for a given problem. 2) Ability to analyze data from the experiment. 3) Ability to write and present findings in a form of a thesis and presentation.

GRADING SCHEME

Contribution from supervisor (100%)

Contribution from supervisor (60%) & internal examiner (40%)

Contribution from internal examiner – 100% [Internal examiner I (50%) & internal examiner II (50%)]

Percentage of overall assessment

LOG BOOK (compulsory)  The FYP Log Book is an important document that must be completed by all the FYP students  The progress evaluation marks given by supervisors will partially be based on what student write in their log books.  Students are required to record their weekly activities and write a short log to summarize their findings or accomplishments every week (supervisor signature)  Log Book format

“The School (with supervisor’s approval) can give a student the E grade if the student-supervisor meeting is less than six (6) times for the whole semester.” LOG BOOK (compulsory)

FILE/FOLDER (recommended) Students are highly encouraged to maintain a separate file or folder to compile all their findings/sketches/printouts/ datasheets as a complement to the log book. This can be used as evidence to support the claims as written in the logbook.

Suggestion: Always bring these 2 items when meeting your supervisor 1)LOG BOOK 2)FILE/FOLDER

RELATED FORM 1)Chemical order Form (Supervisor Approval) 2)Changing of FYP Title/Supervisor (Supervisor, New Supervisor and FYP Coordinator Approval)

PLAGIARISM “Plagiarism is the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work.” (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plagiarism)

 Students who are caught plagiarizing other people’s work can fail their FYP if there are enough evidence.  Evidence can be found relatively easy now by using several software tools such as: Internet Search Engines Directories Online book reviews Anti-plagiarism software PLAGIARISM

Therefore: learn how to cite/acknowledge other people’s work correctly. “Realize that the whole point of the FYP is to give you an opportunity to learn how to apply and expand your knowledge. If you cheat, then you will deny yourself from your own personal development” PLAGIARISM

THANK YOU…
